Your Dog's Daily Needs!

As humans, we have daily requirement, rest, food, exercise, entertainment, love and companionship. Dogs are exactly the same! In order for them to live a happy, well-balanced and harmonious existence in their home, they have daily requirements as well.

Being left at home for eight hours a day with nothing to do sets the scene for a bored, destructive and very unhappy dog! Each breed has their own specific requirements and some have more requirements than others!

Before getting a puppy, have a look at your lifestyle, work commitments, household members, etc. How much time will you have available to spend with your dog? What type or breed of dog are you looking to get?

A working type dog needs a lot more exercise and mental stimulation than a couch potato! Are you able to mentally and physically stimulate your dog? How much space do you have and how precious is your garden to you?

All these factors and many more come into play when you choose a dog. Responsible dog ownership involves making sure that you are able to meet your dog’s daily needs!

I feel very strongly about this subject and wish the laws in SA would change to reflect that they are sentient being with emotions and give harsher punishment to criminals who abuse and hurt animals! 💥❤️🐹❤️💥

Learning Recall, Loose-leash Walking & the 3 Second Rule!

What a fun training session this morning with Adam, the teenage cocker spaniel in the Constantia mountains. He's 6 months old and started barking at people and dogs as well as literally having "spaniel deafness" and didn't want to come back when called.

Being a teenager, he could get himself into quite a bit of trouble with other dogs so we worked on making ourselves way more fun and interesting than the other dogs and people walking in the area.

We worked on walking on and off leash, played fun games of fetch, did a bit of parkour with him jumping over small logs, peek-a-boo and used a lot of treats, toys, pine cones and distractions to reward his attention control and recall. He absolutely loved the water and had us in fits of giggles with him blowing bubbles in the water!

We worked on the 3 second rule when greeting other dogs and when he got a bit much for other dogs, he respected their communication and came right back to us when called. What an absolute star!

I showed his mommy how to use emergency leash techniques - U turns and Walking Up the Leash. With continual practice and making herself more interesting and fun than other dogs, he's well on his way to becoming a "perfect recaller"! Go team Adam and Kathi! 🌺❤️🐶❤️🌺

I really love this! 😍🐾😍 It's never to late to start training your dog!🐾🐹❤️ Sometimes the information (commands) we give to our dogs are just not understood, after all we have a language barrier. It becomes easier when we learn "doggie language" and learn how to communicate with our dogs in such a way that they understand us and what is expected of them.

If the information we are giving our dogs is unclear then we cannot possibly expect them to understand and listen to us! One of the biggest things I work with is the relationship between dog and guardian, rebuilding the trust, understanding and love between them. Training should be fun, fun and loads more fun! It should not be stressful for you or your canine companion! 💥❤️🐾🐹🐾❤️💥
