The ‘Sibe’ is a breed unsurpassed by any other, except its relatives. The more familiar you become with this breed, the more you will grow to love his independent, intelligent and free-spirited personality. Unf

ortunately, there is another side to the Siberian coin because of the very nature of his personality. People often take ownership of these dogs because of their unique and intriguing looks - only to discover very soon that they require hard work and dedication. The Siberian Husky is a companion animal with special needs, and as a result is a very misunderstood breed. People do not research the nature of this breed adequately before owning one, and are then often not able to meet the special needs of this breed. As a result, the Siberians end up abused, neglected or simply abandoned. Alternatively, they can find themselves locked up in animal shelters. The tragedy of this however, is that they are one of the most euthanased breeds because of their inability to cope with confinement for long periods.

There are some posts that feel particularly special to write. This is one of them.

In July 2025, Husky Rescue KZN took what felt like a rather enormous leap of faith. We were given the opportunity to purchase our little red train , the Husky Express, for R180,000.

For a small rescue organisation, that was no small undertaking.

But we believed that the Husky Express could become more than just a train. It could create smiles and memories for families at the Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market, while at the same time becoming a sustainable source of income for the dogs in our care.

And so we said YES.

Thirteen months later, on 31 August 2026, we made our final payment.

R180,000 PAID.
BALANCE R0.
THE HUSKY EXPRESS IS OFFICIALLY OURS! 🎉🚂🐾

But we certainly didn't do this alone.

To every single person who bought a R35 ticket and climbed aboard the Husky Express between July 2025 and August 2026, this celebration belongs to you too.

One ticket might have seemed like such a small thing.

But there were hundreds and hundreds of those little tickets.

Children climbed aboard. Parents and grandparents climbed aboard. Families made memories. There were smiles, waves, ho***rs and countless trips around that little track.

And slowly...

R35 by R35.
Ride by ride.
Saturday by Saturday.
..you helped us buy a train. ❤️

This was indeed a community achievement!

And now a new chapter begins.

The repayments have finished.

The Husky Express hasn't. 🚂

She'll keep going around that track. She'll keep carrying excited little passengers. She'll keep creating memories.

But now, instead of helping us buy the train, the income she generates can help us do what this whole adventure was ultimately about:

Helping us rescue and care for the dogs in need. 🐾❤️

To everyone who believed in the dream, donated, helped, shared, supported, bought a ticket and climbed aboard...
