Happy Mother's Day to all you incredible moms out there 💐🌼🌹🌸🌺

To celebrate this special day I have posted a few pictures of a Black-backed jackal mother with her two pups. We set out on an early morning self drive from Satara to Orpen in the Kruger National Park in the hopes of ticking off Black-backed jackal on our animal sightings list. As we neared Orpen camp the bush obliged and rewarded us with a mom and two playful pups who were getting their hunting lessons.

Reasons why Black-backed jackals make great mothers:
🌺 For the first three weeks of the pups' lives, the mother stays in the den and spends roughly 90% of her time looking after them;
🌺 To keep pups safe from predators, the mother will move her litter to a new, safe den location about every two weeks;
🌺 The mother will actively defend her pups and often uses complex, high-pitched yapping to intimidate or distract predators much larger than herself, such as lions or leopards

📍 ~ Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp, Kruger National Park, South Africa

After knowing our first night at Kruger National Park would be spent at the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp on the 31st of December 2026, I had a look at what bird specials to look out for at this camp. The one that stood out the most for me was the Brown-headed Parrott as I had never seen one, I love its bright green colours and I had learnt that they are mostly restricted to this park in South Africa.

After arriving and checking in we took a walk on the path along the dam in front of the restaurant and at the very last tree on this pathway I heard the unmistakably high pitched and sharp screeches I had made sure I got filiar with when learning about the Brown-headed Parrott. Excitement ensued as I finally spotted this beautiful bird in the green tree canopy above me and after many failed attempts, the above photo was taken 🎉 💚 🤎

An update on my The Big Bird Challenge run by the KRUGER MAGAZINE in which I attempt to photograph and ID as many species as possible in 365 days:

My next 4 days of the challenge began on the 1st of January 2026 and ended on the 5th of January 2026. This yielded a further 35 species in the area from Berg en Dal, up to Olifants and then Satara in Kruger National Park.

Total bird species for my trip to Kruger, photographed and identified, is 80 which is the same grand total for my challenge thus far.

Next to come was a trip in Feb in Mkuze Gane Reserve, KZN...

So I entered the The Big Bird Challenge run by the KRUGER MAGAZINE in which I attempt to photograph and ID as many species as possible in 365 days.

This is new, and challenging for me, as this more about quantity rather than quality but is pushing me to get my bird game together 🐦📝

My first day of the challenge began on the 31st of December 2025 which yielded 45 species in the area from Malelane to Berg en Dal in Kruger National Park:
