Felix would like everyone to know that he is on duty for Saturday Surgery today and has a very busy schedule ahead of him! 🐾

Joining him today are Kath, Brenna, Colleen and Cyprian.

Before consultations begin, Felix will accompany Kath on his usual perimeter walk around the gardens and to complete his morning ablutions. On his return, a generous serving of Hill's c/d Stress biscuits will be enthusiastically demolished before the real work begins.

His next task will be keeping Colleen on her toes by attempting, several times, to push open the front gate and patrol the front of the practice—an activity he knows perfectly well is not allowed but continues to test whenever the opportunity arises!

After that, Felix will take up his position in the pharmacy on top of his tower, where he and Brenna will carefully supervise the dispensing of medications and ensure everything is running smoothly.

Between cat naps, he will check in on Cyprian, stroll through the prep room and kennels, and make sure all our patients are receiving the very best care.

We suspect he'll also find time for a few cuddles and plenty of admiration along the way.

Felix and the team look forward to welcoming you to MediVet Saturday Surgery today. ❤️🐱

Little Missy is just over 6 weeks old and isn't she absolutely adorable? ❤️ Just look at those whiskers and that precious little chin!

Missy recently came to see us after developing coccidiosis, a common intestinal parasite infection often seen in kittens. Coccidia live in the intestines and can cause diarrhoea, tummy discomfort, dehydration and poor growth, particularly in very young kittens whose immune systems are still developing.

The good news is that Missy is feeling much better and is growing into a happy, playful little kitten. However, a follow-up test showed that she is still carrying the parasite, so she has started another round of treatment to make sure the infection is completely cleared.

We think you'll agree that patients don't get much cuter than this little pumpkin! 🥰🐾

We celebrated another birthday this week! 🎉

Our wonderful Cyprian completed another trip around the sun, and we couldn't let the week pass without celebrating him.

Cyp is an incredibly efficient, experienced and loyal member of the MediVet family. His smile, infectious laughter, spontaneous dancing to the background music, and that famous intense concentration face make him truly one of a kind.

We honestly don't know what we'd do without him.

Cyp, we're sorry your birthday wishes came a little later in the day than they should have (Kath is notoriously hopeless with dates and Deana was run off her feet!), but we hope you know just how valued, appreciated and loved you are by all of us.

Happy Birthday, Cyprian! We hope the year ahead is a wonderful one. 🎂🎈❤️

Meet Beast... the gentlest "Beast" you'll ever meet. ❤️

At 11 years old and weighing in at a whopping 63kg, Beast is a giant ball of black fur, love, and kindness. Despite suffering from arthritis, he's a happy boy who loves his food and enjoys pottering around the garden.

But on Tuesday morning, something wasn't right.

Beast didn't want to eat. He just wanted to lie down, and he was constantly panting – a sure sign that something was very wrong.

When he arrived at MediVet, apart from a temperature, there wasn't much to find on examination. Blood tests showed that his liver, kidneys, and other important values were all normal, which was reassuring. However, X-rays revealed something far more concerning.

His spleen was enlarged and very abnormal.

Although there was no obvious sign of internal bleeding at the time, we were worried that the membrane surrounding the spleen may have torn. This could be extremely painful and, more importantly, could lead to catastrophic internal haemorrhage.

A difficult decision had to be made: operate immediately or wait?

After careful consideration, we felt surgery was in Beast's best interests. If we found evidence that the splenic mass had spread elsewhere in his abdomen, we knew some very difficult decisions might lie ahead.

As soon as surgery began, we discovered our concerns had been justified. The splenic mass had already ruptured. Beast's abdomen contained a significant amount of blood, and he was continuing to bleed.

Thankfully, our experienced surgical team moved quickly. The spleen was successfully removed without complications, stopping any further blood loss. His abdomen was thoroughly cleaned and the surgery was completed successfully.

For a senior giant-breed dog, Beast's recovery was remarkable.

Although his mum would have loved him home immediately, we felt it was safest for him to spend the night in hospital where he could be closely monitored in a quiet, controlled environment.

By Wednesday morning, Beast was bright, comfortable, and more than ready to head home. We were delighted to receive a photo of him relaxing on his blanket, taking life very easy while recovering.

Now we wait for the laboratory results and keep everything crossed for good news. 🤞

Well done, big boy. We're all rooting for you. ❤️

Someone celebrated a very special milestone birthday on Monday! 🎉

Unfortunately, we can't share photos of her surrounded by flowers, cake, and presents because she's taken a well-deserved week off to enjoy some sun, sand, relaxation, and celebrations.

Happy Birthday to our wonderful Charlene! 🥳 Thank you for everything you do for our patients, clients, and our team. We hope your week is filled with laughter, happiness, and plenty of special memories.

Enjoy every moment, Charlene – you've earned it! ❤️🎂🌴☀️

Karla's Story: Courage, Determination, and One Very Brave Girl ❤️🐾

A few weeks ago, we shared a photo of Karla being monitored overnight by one of our vets using our CCTV system. Today, we're thrilled to share her incredible story.

Karla was rushed to MediVet after a serious fight with her brother, Duke. There had been several changes in their home environment, which we believe may have contributed to something called displaced aggression. This occurs when a dog becomes highly stressed, anxious, or aroused by a trigger and redirects that emotion towards another animal nearby, often a companion they would normally get along with.

Sadly, Karla came off much worse in the altercation.

She arrived in excruciating pain with severe bite wounds to her shoulders and armpit. The injuries were extensive, and we were very concerned not only about the damage to her tissues but also about how her body, kidneys, and other organs would cope with the shock and trauma.

From the moment she arrived, Karla was surrounded by love and care. Our nurses and assistants gently nursed her, using blankets and pillows to support her body and minimise movement of her painful shoulders and neck. She received multiple strong pain medications, antibiotics, intensive wound management, and daily laser therapy sessions to encourage healing and reduce discomfort.

There were times when we worried she might lose some of the skin over her shoulders due to the severity of the injuries.

But Karla had other plans.

Day by day, she grew stronger in the ward and soon she was discharged to heal at home.

At her check-up on Monday, we were absolutely delighted with her progress. Her wounds have healed remarkably well. Only the large laceration in her armpit remains, and while that area will take many more weeks to heal because of the constant movement, we couldn't be happier with how far she has come.

The best news of all is that Duke has already seen a specialist behaviourist, and things have settled down nicely at home.

Karla, you have been an absolute superstar. The pain you must have endured is difficult to imagine, yet you never complained, never became cross, and never made caring for you difficult. You greeted us with your beautiful smile and won the hearts of every member of the MediVet team.

Keep healing, sweet girl. We are all so proud of you. ❤️

A Message From the MediVet Team

Recently, we have seen comments on social media describing veterinarians as "money grabbers" who care more about profit than pets. Comments like these are incredibly hurtful and deeply demoralising to the people who dedicate their lives to caring for animals.

The truth is that nobody chooses a career in veterinary medicine because it is an easy way to make money. We become veterinarians, nurses, receptionists, and animal care assistants because we love animals and want to make a difference in their lives.
What many people don't see are the realities behind the scenes.

Every day, veterinary teams are faced with the challenge of trying to diagnose and treat sick patients while balancing the financial limitations of their owners. We know how difficult it can be when a beloved pet needs treatment that stretches a family's budget. We spend countless hours discussing options, prioritising care, finding solutions, and trying to achieve the best possible outcome for both the patient and their family.

Running a veterinary practice is also far more expensive than most people realise. The medications, laboratory equipment, surgical instruments, anaesthetic machines, monitoring equipment, X-ray units, ultrasound machines, hospital facilities, consumables, staff salaries, electricity, insurance, licensing fees, maintenance, and ongoing training all come at a significant cost.

What is often overlooked is the enormous investment practice owners make to ensure pets receive high-quality care. Every piece of modern diagnostic equipment, every monitoring device in theatre, every improvement to patient care, every new service, and every technology upgrade represents a substantial financial commitment.

Practice owners have a choice. They can cut corners and offer cheaper care, or they can invest heavily in equipment, facilities, training, and staff so that patients receive the standard of care they deserve. At MediVet, we have always believed that our patients deserve the very best care we can provide. That commitment requires continual investment and comes with significant financial responsibility.

The reality is that providing good veterinary medicine is expensive. Providing safe anaesthesia is expensive. Maintaining modern diagnostic equipment is expensive. Employing skilled and compassionate staff is expensive. These costs are not about greed; they are about delivering quality care without compromising patient safety.

Alongside these financial realities is the emotional burden that veterinary teams carry every day. We celebrate the recoveries, grieve the losses, worry about critically ill patients, answer messages after hours, visit hospitalised patients on weekends, and carry the weight of difficult decisions long after we leave work.

The entire MediVet team gives their all. We work hard. We care deeply. We love each and every pet that walks through our doors. We laugh with our clients, cry with our clients, and do our very best for every patient entrusted to us.

So before judging veterinary professionals based on a social media post or comment, please remember that behind every veterinary practice is a team of people who care far more than most will ever know.

A little kindness and understanding go a very long way.

❤️🐾

To our fellow veterinary professionals: thank you for continuing to show up, care deeply, and give so much of yourselves to the animals and people who need you.

Our staff work incredibly long hours, and the work they do is often both physically exhausting and emotionally demanding. That's why finding time to recharge is so important.

For two of our team members (Kath and Colleen), peace is found in the bush with their cameras at the ready.

Every year in May, Kath attends a fundraising weekend at Tembe Elephant Park, an event that raises thousands of rands for both the local communities and conservation efforts within the park. It's a truly special weekend, and nothing is going to stop her from making her annual pilgrimage to Tembe!

This year, she and her hubby stopped over in Hluhluwe for a night on their way there. While out on an afternoon game drive, their day, week, month, and possibly even year was made when they stumbled across a pack of African Wild Dogs on the hunt. After following the pack for about 20 minutes, another vehicle joined them.

As it turns out, the world is a very small place!

"Finding Dr Kath and hubby doing what they love in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. Great to meet and chat there with this special sighting of Wild Dogs 😍
– Pieter & Corné Victor"

A huge thank you to our wonderful clients, Pieter and Corné, for these incredible photographs and for the lovely conversation in the middle of the African bush.

What an absolutely unforgettable sighting! 🐾🧡
