A longer walk isn’t always a better walk. 🐾
For Walk Your Dog Week, we’re looking beyond the kilometres.
A good walk isn’t only about how far your dog goes. It’s an opportunity to sniff, explore, process their surroundings, practise skills and engage with the world around them.
Letting your dog stop and sniff gives them time to investigate all the information carried through scent. Taking a different route can offer new sights, sounds and smells. And adding a few minutes of simple, reward-based training can turn part of your walk into a chance to practise focus, recall or loose-lead walking.
Of course, dogs still need appropriate physical exercise, and how much they need will depend on factors such as their age, breed, health, fitness and individual personality.
But sometimes, a more fulfilling walk isn’t about adding another kilometre. It’s about making the walk more meaningful.
So this Walk Your Dog Week, don’t just ask,
“How far did we walk?”
Ask:
“What did my dog get out of it?” 🐶
Save this for your next walk and try one of these ideas with your dog!
