Bella and Billy arrived at one of our vet practices after suddenly losing their sight and being unable to walk properly.
On enquiry, we found out their owners, with good intentions, to treat for parasites, had overdosed them with ivermectin, a common antiparasitic treatment for cattle, sheep and goats. This is not the first case we have seen, and due to the sudden increase in instances of pet owners using ivermectin off-label, meaning it is not registered for use in cats and dogs. We are concerned that it will not be the last.
Ivermectin definitely has a valid use in veterinary medicine; however, indiscriminate use may have tragic consequences.
There are much more effective and safe treatments for parasites in dogs and cats, and although ivermectin may be cheaper, the consequences and cost associated with those may be more expensive.
Luckily, Bella and Billy, after treatment in hospital, have made a full recovery and are safe at home.
