Our hardest goodbye. We had to say our last goodbye to my Pokémon, my shadow, our noonie, our Tazz yesterday morning, 17-7-26. A part of me left with her.

She developed pancreatitis again, within 3 weeks of her first diagnoses. When we first discovered she had pancreatitis, we had made the decision that if she went downhill again, we would not put her through the hospitalizations again and all the meds and trying to get her to eat. It was hard the first time and took a toll on her unt she started feeling better. She had her check-up on Monday, and her pancreatic enzyme was almost back within normal range. Yesterday morning, she was showing signs of pain. Took her to the vet, and her pancreatic enzyme was over 1200, and with her kidney disease, it was not fair on her to prolong the inevitable. It was the hardest decision, but in our hearts, we knew it was the right thing to do.

I have been very quiet but am still around. This year has been challenging and the last few weeks even more so with Tazz.

Here is the clipped version and what I have learned.

Tazz was diagnosed with kidney disease in January. Doing great, loving her food.
At a routine blood check in the beginning of June, we picked up that her pancreatic enzyme had increased, so for 'safety,' took her off the renal food. 2 weeks later, she was hospitalized twice within days of each other for pancreatitis.

No one prepares you for the diseases they can develop as they age, how the issues are interlinked or how quickly they can go downhill, and just stop eating food. One also finds out the hard way that there is no pellet available in South Africa that caters to dogs with kidney disease and pancreatitis / multi organ issues. One has to feed for one of the diseases, and generally, it's for pancreatitis as it's more painful and can be more fatal. Kidney disease is a progressive disease, and the progression can be slowed down with the correct diet, which goes out the window when focusing on the pancreas and feeding pellets. The only real option is to feed fresh, but that then requires a recipe to be formulated.

No one prepares you for the veterinary costs, so please consider insurance for your pets before they become too old. As an example, if your dog needs to be hospitalized and diagnostics done to determine pancreatitis, you can look at anywhere from R8000 plus. A proper and full set of bloods, including the blood checks for pancreatitis, electrolytes, and SDMA, can cost around R3000. If you do not have insurance, and you have an older pet, Kido is a nice option, and affordable or Medi-Pet has the lite option for seniors

The emotional toll is another thing, but having a great support system really helps. We thought we were losing Tazz 2 weeks ago, but the reality is that her time with us is numbered. We do not know when her time will come, but we are cherishing every moment.

I am still here, I still make enrichment products and send out orders, but my posting on social media can definitely do with some improvements 🫣😅.

We have been very quiet on social media, but we are still around and working on orders.

It's been a rough few months with Tazz. She had her first ever dental and first ever ear infection in January. She started on an additional pain med in February and had Giardia again in March. We were battling with her gut for almost 3 months due to the course of panacur given for Giardia. Eventually, it was determined she had too much bad gut bacteria. We tried transitioning her back onto pellets. It kind of worked, but while still slowly transitioning, she had gut issues again, so we stopped.
I am so thankful I came across Nutripet Consulting. Claire has been absolutely amazing and patient. Tazz went for a check-up about 2 weeks ago as I wanted to provide updated bloods to Claire before she started working on a recipe for Tazz.

Tazz has had elevated ALT for 2 years (age related liver disease), and I also wanted to see if the pain medication was affecting her organs. I had also noticed Tazz had become more skittish over the last few weeks and thought her pain meds were no longer working. I mentioned this to our vet. As much as I really didn't want to, our vet said we needed to do an ultrasound as we last did one 2 years ago. I am extremely thankful she said we had to do one. It turns out Tazz has GBM - the initial stages of gall bladder mucocoele - and this is the reason she had become more skittish. GBM is a result of the gallbladder not releasing bile, etc, and it starts building up and forms a sludge. If not caught, it can be life-threatening as the gallbladder can burst. If meds don't work, then surgery is the only option, but it's a very high-risk surgery.

No one tells you this - but GBM is very common in certain breeds and older dogs.

This also shows why an ultrasound is so important as not everything shows up in bloods.

We are slowly transitioning Tazz onto her new recipe, and Claire has been amazing. I have asked a lot of questions with lots of why's. She has answered them all, with detailed explanations. It will take about another 3 - 4 weeks to have Tazz fully transitioned as we are adding 1 ingredient at a time to avoid any gut upsets.

How is everyone? I cannot believe Christmas is just around the corner.

It's been a while since I last posted 🙈🫣.

Life has been super busy for us the last few months. Love my remote job but it definitely drains the brain. I have done a number of orders but haven't always had time to take pictures.

Abby had her first dental and ended up having 4 teeth removed. It's actually crazy as her teeth looked fine on the surface, but one never knows what is going on under the gumline. She developed a hematoma under her tongue so really struggled to eat for a number of days.

Tazz has been sick this week and is now on antibiotics. She has started requesting to be carried on some of our walks and no longer wants to walk. 5kgs is heavy when one has to carry her half a km 😂. She can no longer digest chews and ended up at the vet due to being sick from a chew. She also seems to react the opposite of what the vet says should happen when given meds 🫣🤣🤣. Our vet has let us know a new pain med is now available, so I need to do some reading up on it to see if it is an option for Tazz. It's no fun when they get older, and I have to continually remind myself she is 14 yrs old and she can no longer do or eat certain things.

We enjoy our walks and I try to walk the dogs every second day, even if I have to carry Tazz on the way back 🤭, they are most times peaceful and the George dam is always so picturesque.
