Why We’re Seeing More Anxious Dogs

More dogs are struggling with anxiety, but it doesn’t have to be permanent.

One of the biggest factors is early socialization. The first 12 weeks of a puppy’s life are critical for building confidence. During this time, puppies should be safely exposed to different people, dogs, sounds, and environments in positive ways.

Good experiences teach puppies that the world is safe, while negative experiences can create lasting fears.

If your dog is already anxious, don’t worry—it’s never too late to help. With patience, training, and confidence-building, anxious dogs can learn to feel more secure and relaxed.

A confident dog is a happier dog.

Roxy’s First Session 🐾

Roxy’s first proper outing session was a huge success.

She’s a friendly, well-socialised girl who isn’t afraid of people or other dogs. Her biggest challenge is unfamiliar environments and sudden noises, which can make her nervous and cause her to shut down.

Today we visited a dog-friendly pet shop and coffee shop, where we simply sat together and let her take in the world around her — people talking, coffee machines, children laughing, trolleys moving, and all the normal hustle and bustle of everyday life.

To help build positive associations, friendly strangers offered her treats, teaching her that new people and experiences are good things. Rather than comforting her when she felt unsure, I stayed calm and steady beside her, allowing her to work through those feelings and build confidence on her own.

We even introduced her to some completely new sights, including snakes and sheep, and she handled it brilliantly.

By the time we left:

• She had stopped pulling on the lead
• The coffee machine no longer startled her
• The children nearby didn’t bother her
• She interacted calmly with people
• Most importantly, she went home relaxed and happy

This is only the beginning of Roxy’s confidence-building adventures, and I’m incredibly proud of her progress. 🖤🐶

Zara the German Shepherd – First Stay & Play Session

When I first met Zara, it was clear that her challenges went far beyond obedience. She was extremely fearful, anxious, and highly possessive of her owner, reacting aggressively to anyone she saw as a threat.
To help dogs like Zara, we sometimes remove them from the environment they feel responsible for controlling. That's why she joined our Stay & Play program at K9 Elite Academy, where dogs socialize in a structured, controlled setting and learn how to relax around others.

Today started off very difficult. After her owner left, Zara spent nearly two hours trying to escape, checking every fence line and desperately looking for a way out. When more dogs arrived, the pressure became too much, and she hid behind the Wendy house.

One of the most important things to remember with fearful dogs is not to force them out of their safe space. Zara stayed hidden for over an hour, quietly observing and processing everything around her. When she finally came out, she quickly retreated again after another dog looked her way.
But slowly, things began to change.
As the day went on, Zara realized that nobody was going to harm her. The other dogs gave her space, and she gradually became more confident. By mid-afternoon, she was moving around the yard, following the pack, and calmly existing alongside the other dogs.
Her journey is far from over. She still becomes nervous when approached directly, but the difference is that she is no longer shutting down completely. She is participating, learning, and beginning to trust.
The dogs in these sessions are carefully selected to respect boundaries and help nervous dogs gain confidence naturally. That calm, balanced environment is exactly what fearful dogs need.
I’ll definitely be recommending a few more Stay & Play sessions for Zara. Right now, the goal isn’t obedience or perfection—it’s helping her build confidence, enjoy being a dog, and learn that the world isn’t as scary as she once believed.
Well done, Zara. You made me incredibly proud today, and I’m looking forward to seeing your progress over the coming weeks.

Meet This Week’s Dogs in Training: Roxy & Zara

This week, I’d like to introduce two special dogs we’re working with.

Roxy
Roxy is a Pit Bull/American Bully cross who lives in a loving, stable home but struggles with anxiety. Some of this appears genetic, but small gaps in upbringing can also contribute — something that can happen easily, especially when we care deeply for our dogs.
One of the most common questions I get is:
“Should I comfort my anxious dog?”
The answer depends on the situation. If your dog experiences something genuinely traumatic, comfort and reassurance are important. But when a dog becomes fearful of everyday situations, constant comforting can unintentionally reinforce that fear.
Confidence develops when a dog learns, “I was scared, but I got through it.” If we always step in and rescue them emotionally, they never build confidence of their own.

With Roxy, I calmly expose her to new environments, people, and sounds while remaining calm and supportive. Rather than comforting the fear, I allow her to process it and learn she can cope.

Zara
Zara is a purebred German Shepherd who also struggles with severe anxiety. She becomes nervous around strangers and other dogs and may react aggressively when people approach her owner.
This highlights an important difference between protection and claiming.

Many owners believe their anxious dog is protecting them, but in most cases the dog is actually guarding its owner as a resource. The behaviour is driven by fear and insecurity, not confidence.

To help Zara, we’ve temporarily removed that emotional dependency through a short stay-and-train program. This allows her to learn how to regulate her emotions independently rather than relying entirely on one person for security.
Zara had her first Stay and Train with us, and I’ll be sharing weekly updates on both dogs, their progress, and the training methods we’re using.

If your dog struggles with anxiety, fearfulness, or possessive behaviour, I hope these insights help you better understand what may be happening beneath the surface. If you’re feeling stuck or unsure how to help, feel free to reach out and I’ll point you in the right direction.

The 10–12 Week Session — Puppy Culture Program 🐾

This was the final session in the Puppy Culture Program with Nix’s and Malibu’s puppies, and they have come such a long way. The difference between these puppies and many others I see come in for training is huge.

At 10–12 weeks, our main focus is socialisation — meeting other dogs, experiencing different people and environments, and building confidence. We also discuss vaccinations and the balance between keeping puppies isolated versus safely exposing them to the outside world after their initial inoculations.

In my opinion, and in the opinion of many overseas behaviourists and veterinarians, the benefits of safe socialisation far outweigh the risks of keeping puppies completely sheltered. The critical socialisation period closes around 12 weeks, while the final vaccination is usually at 13 weeks.

Of course, this doesn’t mean taking puppies to public parks or dog parks. Instead, introduce them to vaccinated, stable dogs belonging to trusted friends and family.

This week was especially exciting because the puppies came to my place for their very first outing away from their yard and without their mother present. Naturally, they were a little shy at first, which is completely normal, but it didn’t take long before they relaxed, explored, played confidently, and interacted beautifully with my dogs.

We also worked on a little manding practice — teaching them not to jump up for attention — around my children and the other dogs. Within just half an hour, they were doing incredibly well. For puppies this age, 30 minutes is more than enough stimulation, and they handled it brilliantly.

One very important thing when introducing puppies to older dogs or unfamiliar environments: always provide a safe “escape zone,” such as under a table or chair, where they can retreat if they feel unsure.

If a puppy chooses to hide:
• Don’t coax them out
• Don’t lure them out with treats
• Don’t force interaction

Allow them to build confidence at their own pace. When they feel ready, they will come out on their own — and that confidence is genuine, not forced.

These puppies are now 12 weeks old, absolutely fabulous, and officially ready for their new homes. They are beautifully rounded little dogs with wonderful temperaments, and I’m incredibly proud of how far they’ve come.💚
