The Latissimus Dorsi is one of the major muscles that connect the front limb to the trunk of the body. It originates on the supraspinous ligament on T3(thoracic back) all the way to the facia near the croup, and inserts into the humerus of the front leg. The lats retract the front leg and create impulsion to push forward while the foot is on the ground.

A shortness in stride in front is often an indication of restriction in the lats.

The saddle sits directly over this muscle so it is important to have a correctly fitting saddle to keep these muscles moving freely.
