Flowerhorn fish are one of the most eye-catching cichlids in the aquarium world. They’re a man-made hybrid, bred for their bold look and personality.

What makes them stand out:
Nuchal hump: That big forehead bump on mature males is called a "kok".
Colors & patterns: Bright reds, oranges, yellows, whites, with black spots and markings. No two look exactly alike.
Personality: Smart, interactive, and territorial. They recognize owners, beg for food, and will flare at their reflection. Basically a dog in fish form.
Size: Grow 25-40 cm depending on genetics and tank size. They need space.

Care basics:
Tank: Minimum 200L for one adult. They’re messy and territorial.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 7.0-8.0, strong filtration. Keep it clean.
Diet: High-protein pellets, plus occasional shrimp, bloodworms, and veg for color and digestion.
Tankmates: Usually kept alone. They’ll bully most fish. Some keep them with other large, tough cichlids in huge tanks, but it’s risky.

Good to know: They’re hardy and long-lived — 8-12 years with good care. Because they’re hybrids, they’re sterile and can’t breed in the wild.
