📊 AQUACULTURE FARMERS POLL

Aquaculture farmers and farm managers: if you could anonymously compare your farm against other successful aquaculture farms, what would you most like to benchmark?

I am an aquatic veterinarian (Aquaglobal Veterinary Consulting) and interested in understanding which performance areas fish and shrimp farmers consider most valuable for comparison and learning.

Feel free to comment on other areas you would find valuable to benchmark.

🌊 Survival rate
🌊 Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)
🌊 Growth rate
🌊 Water quality management
🌊 Disease occurrence
🌊 Animal welfare indicators

🐟 AI is rapidly changing the future of aquaculture but technology alone cannot solve the industry’s biological and welfare challenges.

In our latest article, we explore how AI-driven monitoring systems may support:
🔹 early disease detection,
🔹 animal welfare,
🔹 behavioural monitoring,
🔹 and preventative veterinary healthcare.

An exciting and rapidly evolving space within modern aquaculture.

🐟 Fish rarely “suddenly” start dying.

In many aquaculture systems, the real problem actually started weeks earlier.

A slight oxygen fluctuation.
A small feeding inconsistency.
Gradual environmental stress.
Subtle behavioural changes nobody thought much about.

Then suddenly:
⚠️ Growth drops
⚠️ Feed conversion worsens
⚠️ Disease appears
⚠️ Mortality spikes
⚠️ Financial losses follow

By the time farms react, the system has often already been under pressure for a long time.

This is one of the biggest hidden challenges in aquaculture:
📉 Mortality is usually the LAST visible sign — not the first.

The farms that perform best are often not the farms that respond fastest during crises…

They are the farms that recognise stress earliest.

I recently wrote about this pattern, what I call the “Farm Loss Escalation Cycle”, and why preventative management is critical.

In our ASK THE AQUATIC VET blog series, I explore a common question:

Why does high stocking density increase disease risk?

If you’re running an aquaculture farm and dealing with:

• Sudden mortality spikes
• Slow or inconsistent growth
• Recurring disease

👉 It may not be a disease problem. It may be a stocking density problem.

High stocking density doesn’t just mean more fish.

It means:
→ More stress
→ Poorer water quality
→ Faster disease spread

And over time, this puts pressure on your system—until performance starts to drop.

👉 The key question is not:
“How many fish can I stock?” but “Can my system support this density consistently?”

Because disease risk is determined by system capacity—not just stocking density.

If you’re seeing these signs, your system may already be under pressure.

Most farms act when losses are already visible.

But by then, the system has already failed in some way.

I help farms identify problems early — before they escalate.

If this escalation cycle is familiar to you and you are interested in knowing more, message “FARM” or email [email protected]

One of the biggest mistakes I see in aquaculture farms:

Trying to fix symptoms instead of understanding the system.

A farm sees:
→ Mortalities increasing
→ Slow growth
→ Poor performance

So they react:
• Add treatments
• Change feed
• Adjust one parameter

But the real issue is usually deeper. Aquaculture systems are interconnected.

A problem in one area affects everything:
• Water quality impacts stress
• Stress impacts immunity
• Immunity impacts survival and growth
If you only treat what you see, the problem comes back.

What actually works is identifying:
→ Where the system is breaking down
→ What the critical control points are
→ What to fix first for the biggest impact

That’s exactly what I focus on in a Rapid Health Check.

Message me “FARM” if you want a quick, practical breakdown of what’s really going on in your system.
