Dear old friend, I’ve just said goodbye …
to the finest company I’ve kept in years, and you were the first person I wanted to tell.
They were a small group, well travelled and horse-mad, every one of them. Each had come a long way, and I suspect each was looking for the same thing: that quiet feeling of coming home to somewhere they’d never been.
They arrived craving dust and stars. The Karoo, being the Karoo, gave them mist and rain first, then sun, and a good deal more outdoors than any of them had ordered. Not one complained. We read spoor in the sand like old newspapers and followed the wild things a little way, just to see where they were going.
It was the real Karoo the whole way through, until the mountains finally gave way to the ocean and the horses felt sand between their hooves. Little rest, I’ll admit, and never a dull hour. Each morning someone looked up from the saddle with that same wide-eyed look, and I was reminded why I’ve never been able to stop doing this.
You’d have liked them. Come and ride with us next time, before we’re both too old to pretend we aren’t.
Yours, still dusty,
The Klein Karoo to Coast
😉
There’s a saddle for you in 13 Nov… dont you want it?
