The Paddock Shapes the Horse

When we think about raising young horses, we often focus on nutrition, genetics and training. But one of the most important factors is often overlooked the quality and safety of the paddock.

Young horses spend countless hours running, playing and developing their bodies. Hidden holes, loose rocks, large boulders, broken fencing, wire and other debris can all increase the risk of injury and impact their long-term soundness.

A safe paddock should be regularly inspected for:

✅ Rocks and boulders that could cause injury
✅ Holes from erosion or burrowing animals
✅ Uneven ground and poor footing
✅ Wire, rubbish and fallen branches
✅ Broken fencing and unsafe gate areas

Strong horses are built from the ground up. A well-maintained paddock allows young horses to move naturally, develop confidence and build strong bones, tendons and muscles.

Good paddock management today helps create sounder, healthier horses tomorrow.

Winter grazing may look sufficient but during colder months, grass often loses nutritional value and may no longer meet your horse’s full needs.

As temperatures drop, horses use more energy to stay warm while winter grazing provides less protein, energy and key nutrients. This is when proper management becomes essential.

Keep an eye on:
• Weight loss
• Poor topline
• Dull coats
• Low energy
• Slow recovery after work

Supporting horses through winter means:
✔️ Quality roughage
✔️ Balanced feed if needed
✔️ Salt and minerals
✔️ Clean fresh water
✔️ Deep, dry bedding for warmth and comfort

A healthy horse through winter starts with proper nutrition and good stable management. ❄️🐴

As temperatures drop, horses burn more energy trying to stay warm especially at night when stables cool down. A deep, full bed of clean shavings helps insulate the body, reduce stress on joints, and encourage proper rest and recovery.

Cold, hard floors increase discomfort and can affect sleep quality, stiffness, and overall condition.

A warm horse starts from the ground up.

Here’s a strong, authority-style Facebook caption to go with the full carousel:

Overfeeding concentrates is one of the most common mistakes we see in yards.

More feed does NOT mean more performance.
In fact, it often leads to the opposite.

➡️ Colic
➡️ Laminitis
➡️ Behaviour issues
➡️ Poor condition despite weight gain

Horses are designed to eat forage first — not large grain meals.

When we overload the system with starch:
You disrupt gut health…
You lose consistency…
And performance suffers.

The reality?
Many horses are overfed and underworked — fed based on habit, not actual workload.

The fix is simple (but often ignored):
✔️ Build the diet around quality roughage
✔️ Use concentrates as a top-up, not the base
✔️ Feed smaller, more frequent meals
✔️ Match feed to the horse’s real workload

If your horse feels “hot”, inconsistent, or just not right…
👉 Start by looking in the bucket.

Feed smart. Not more.
