We’re gearing up for World Rabies Day on 28 September.

Stronger Together for a rabies free world: https://mailchi.mp/savc/world-rabies-day-2026

Rabies is almost always fatal once clinical signs appear, but it is also preventable.

Protecting people and animals from rabies starts with simple actions: vaccinating pets, seeking medical attention after possible exposure, and knowing how to prevent the spread of the disease.

This World Rabies Day, let’s remember that rabies prevention is a shared responsibility. Together, we can protect our communities, our animals and ourselves.

More than caring for animals.

Veterinary and para-veterinary professionals play an important role in South Africa’s health and wellbeing.

From caring for companion animals and livestock, to supporting food safety, preventing the spread of disease and protecting public health, their work reaches far beyond the consultation room.

They are an essential part of One Health, recognising that the health of people, animals and our environment are closely connected.

Their work matters to all of us.

How would you know if the person attending to your animal’s health is registered?

Before entrusting someone with your animal's care, make sure they are registered with the SAVC.

Registration confirms that veterinary and para-veterinary professionals:
• Meet the required education and training standards
• Can practise in South Africa
• Are accountable to the profession's Code of Conduct

Choosing an SAVC registered professional gives you confidence that your animal is being cared for by someone who meets the standards required to practice.

Because your animals deserve qualified, professional care.

Did you know your health is connected to animal and environmental health?

This idea is called One Health.

It recognises that the health of people, animals and the environment are closely linked. When animals are healthy and ecosystems are protected, communities are better protected from disease, food supplies are safer, and the environment is more resilient.

That's why veterinary and para-veterinary professionals do much more than care for sick animals. They help prevent disease, protect food safety, support environmental health and contribute to the wellbeing of us all.

Healthy animals. Healthy people. Healthy environments.

Biosecurity starts with all of us: https://proagri.co.za/biosecurity-in-south-africa/

Biosecurity means taking simple steps to help prevent the spread of diseases that affect animals.

Whether you own pets, livestock or not, you can make a difference by:
• Washing hands before and after handling animals.
• Cleaning and disinfecting footwear, equipment and animal enclosures.
• Avoiding unnecessary contact between animals from different locations.
• Reporting unusual illness or unexplained deaths to your veterinarian or the relevant authorities.
• Following movement restrictions during disease outbreaks.

These simple actions help protect animal health, support farmers and strengthen South Africa's food security.

Healthy animals help build healthy communities.
