𝗟𝗼𝗹𝗮'𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹... 🦷

One enthusiastic bite was all it took.

When Lola arrived, we found a fresh complicated crown fracture with a tiny red dot in the centre. That red dot is the pulp, the living core of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. In other words, Lola had the equivalent of an exposed nerve.

What makes this fascinating is that enamel is the hardest substance in the body, even tougher than bone. It takes serious force to break it. We often see injuries like this when dogs bite down on objects that don't give way, such as bones, hooves, antlers, rocks, or other hard chew items.

The tricky part? Dogs rarely complain. Many continue eating, playing and wagging as though nothing happened while a painful tooth sits quietly in their mouth.

A fresh pulp exposure is a race against time. The longer the pulp remains exposed, the greater the risk of bacteria travelling into the tooth, leading to infection, root abscesses and chronic pain.

So next time your dog proudly crunches through something that sounds like a brick being demolished, remember: teeth are designed to tear and chew, not crack stones.

Fortunately, Lola's tooth was identified early and she received the care she needed. 💙

Most days he's a whirlwind of mischief, curiosity, and questionable life choices. But every now and then, he pauses long enough to remind us that even the smallest cats carry a little tiger inside them.
