🚨 Heat Stroke in Horses: Know the Signs 🚨
Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency and needs immediate veterinary care. Here’s what to watch for:
🌡️ Body temperature: Re**al temperature of 40.5–41.7°C or higher
💧 Sweating: The horse may stop sweating, leaving the skin hot and dry
😴 Behaviour: Extreme lethargy, weakness, confusion, anxiety or agitation
💨 Breathing & heart: Rapid, shallow breathing and a high heart rate that doesn’t slow after exercise
⚠️ Movement: Muscle tremors, staggering, stumbling or collapse
🩸 Gums: Bright red or, in severe cases, bluish
Heat exhaustion vs heat stroke
➡️ Heat exhaustion: The horse is still sweating but appears sluggish with slightly raised heart and breathing rates
➡️ Heat stroke: Sweating stops, body temperature rises rapidly, and organs can begin to fail
🚑 What to do immediately:
• Call your veterinarian
• Move the horse into shade or a cool, breezy area
• Soak the entire body with cold water and scrape off warm water, repeating until temperature drops below 39.5°C
• Use fans to improve airflow
• Offer cool water (do not force)
Risk factors:
☀️ High heat and humidity
🏇 Intense exercise
🚚 Poor ventilation (stables or transport)
⚖️ Obesity or poor fitness
🚰 Limited access to water
Early recognition and fast action can save a life.

🌡️ Time to Vaccinate Against West Nile Virus!
West Nile Virus (WNV) is spread by mosquitoes and can cause serious neurological disease in horses; sometimes leading to weakness, incoordination, or even paralysis.
The virus is carried by wild birds and spread by mosquitoes, especially around dams or standing water. Because mosquito numbers rise in the warmer months, now is the best time to vaccinate against WNV, before midges and mosquitoes are at their peak in the hotter months.
Vaccination is safe, effective, and the best protection we can offer our horses.
💉 Protect your horse today! Contact us to book their WNV vaccine!

🚨‼️Important Information Regarding Vaccination Permissions ‼️🚨

Please note that vaccination permissions are now strictly specific to the property, veterinary practice, and applicant. This year, all clients must submit a motivation explaining why the permission is required.

Key Points to Remember:

- Permissions cannot be transferred to another person or property, even if the horse is sold or moved.
- If the vet arrives at a property and the permission is not issued for that specific yard, the vet may not proceed with vaccination.
- If this happens, please contact the state vet immediately to inform them.

In summary, permissions are granted for specific horses to be vaccinated at a designated location and practice only. For any further information please contact SAEHP on 021 001 4363
