Stop doing this!!
Do not ever put your hand in a strange dog's face to sniff. He can determine all he needs to know from 6 feet away. They have a phenomenal sense of smell. Putting a hand in a dog's face is a disrespectful move and some dogs will react aggressively. Place your side to the dog and let him approach on his own terms. If we could stop adults and especially children from sticking their hands in dog's faces we can eliminate countless bites based on an old wives tale. Your hand is full of sensitive nerves and is one of the worst places to be bit.
