Reef Tank Mistake: Nighttime Water Flow & pH Drops

Are you turning down your powerheads at night to cut down on noise? Be careful! 🛑

Dropping your powerhead speed too much can collapse your gyre circulation pattern into weak, localized eddies. This leads to elevated CO2 levels and dropping pH overnight, a hidden stability killer that’s easy to mistake for a dosing issue.

Pro Tip: Run your powerheads at a slightly reduced speed at night, not a dramatically reduced one. Total silence isn’t worth sacrificing the circulation pattern that keeps your tank stable while you sleep! 🐠🌊

Why Tall Tanks FAIL For Flow 🚫🌊

Stop making this costly tank dimension mistake! 🛑

The Gyre Flow concept is the secret to keeping a healthy, detritus-free reef. Ideal tank geometry (twice as long as it is wide) creates a continuous circular current.

Tall or square tanks break up this circular flow, creating dangerous dead spots under your rockwork and fighting your wavemakers at every turn! 🐠🌊

Got a persistent algae problem in the corners of your tank? 🌊 It might just be a flow issue!

Fixing dead spots often comes down to simple pump placement. In this video, I share how moving a single powerhead from the front of my tank to the rear (angled toward the back corners) solved 6 months of frustrating algae problems in just 10 minutes! ⏱️

If you're battling dead zones, try these two quick fixes:
• Reposition an existing pump to direct flow directly into that area.
• Add a small auxiliary pump specifically aimed at the dead zone.

What's the difference between a return pump and a powerhead?
Your return pump moves water from your sump back to the display — it's the plumbing loop. Powerheads sit inside the display tank and create water movement in your display tank.

The biggest limitation of a traditional wet/dry sump? Nitrate. 🪸🧪

While your protein skimmer does an excellent job managing the organic load before it breaks down, a standard wet sump lacks any built-in mechanism for natural nitrate export beyond that point. Once those nitrates start to build, you are entirely dependent on regular water changes to keep them in check.

If you are running a fish-only system or a FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) setup, a wet sump is a solid, highly cost-effective choice. But if you’re building a reef tank with sensitive corals that demand pristine water chemistry, it’s time to step it up to a refugium or a classic Berlin configuration.

The most important aspect of any reef tank is stability 🪸

Wherever you decide you want your parameters to be, just make sure they are stable and everything will flourish. Marine life, especially corals, thrive on stability. This stability comes in many different forms. From lighting, to temperature, to minerals and food, whatever you do, find your recipe and stick to it 🙌🏼

This tank belongs to a very good friend of mine and he’s had it going for the past 10 years. With many hours of labour, trials and tribulations, taking a step back to admire such a beautiful example of a reef tank, I feel privileged to be able to share this with everyone. 🌊 The Foundation of Reef Filtration: The Wet Sump 🐠

Looking to understand how a wet sump keeps your reef tank thriving?

As the most widely used and easiest-to-understand biological filtration method in the hobby, a standard wet sump relies on a simple, highly effective three-chamber progression to clean your water:

1️⃣ The Skimmer Chamber: Raw water from the display flows here first. Your protein skimmer’s job is to strip out dissolved organic compounds

2️⃣ The Biological Media: Next, water moves to highly porous biomedia (like bioblocks or biospheres). These modern solutions offer maximum bacterial surface area, allowing beneficial bacteria to colonize every pore and drive your nitrogen cycle by processing ammonia into nitrate.

3️⃣ The Return Pump: Clean, filtered water is safely pumped back up to your display tank.

Reliable, fast to establish, and incredibly easy to maintain—it’s the classic blueprint for long-term reef success.
