'' I'm going to be honest with you about something.

I eat my own droppings. Every morning. On purpose. And if I stop, I'm in serious trouble.

I'm a cottontail rabbit. But the dropping I eat isn't the dry round pellet you see scattered across your yard. It's something completely different — a soft shiny cluster called a cecotrope that comes from a special fermentation chamber at the end of my gut. You've never seen one because I eat it the moment it exits.

My plant-based diet — grass, bark, leaves — is low in nutrients. The fiber needs to pass through my system twice to extract everything useful. The first pass breaks the plant material down. The cecotrope captures the B vitamins, proteins, and fatty acids that weren't absorbed the first time. The second pass picks up what the first one missed.

It's not a flaw. It's a two-stage fermentation system more efficient than a cow's rumen. Every rabbit, hare, guinea pig, and chinchilla does the same thing. It's the reason we thrive on diets that would starve most mammals our size.

The dry pellets you see in your yard are the waste. The cecotropes are the nutrition. You only ever see the waste because I handle the rest before you wake up.

🐾 If you have rabbits in your yard:

- The pellets scattered across your lawn are free slow-release fertilizer — they're almost pure processed plant fiber and break down into the soil quickly
- A rabbit grazing your lawn is trimming grass and fertilizing it at the same time
- If you see a rabbit sitting quietly in one spot for a while in early morning, it's likely eating cecotropes — leave it alone, it's a necessary part of the daily routine
- Cottontails don't dig or damage gardens the way groundhogs do — a low mesh barrier around specific beds is enough to redirect them without conflict

The rabbit in your yard isn't doing anything gross. It's completing the most efficient digestive loop in the neighborhood 🌿
