They waited for us. Now they're waiting for you. 🐾❄️

We take in around 75 unwanted and stray animals every day, many through emergencies, neglect cases, or owners no longer able to cope.

Recently, intake increased further:
🌧️ 50 animals were rescued during Cape Town’s severe storm, cold, wet, and exposed to the elements.
🐾 24 more came in after an illegal backyard breeding operation was shut down in Dunoon.

At the same time, winter adoptions drop by an average of 14%, and in the lowest month on record they fell by more than 30%.
When intake stays high and adoptions slow down, space runs out fast - and the next animal in need has nowhere to go. 🏠

Sir Wiggles was one of the dogs rescued during the storm. He is a confident 2-year-old with plenty of charm, he loves attention, affection and a good belly rub. He’s ready to be part of a home where he can soak up love and companionship.

Help us make space for the next rescue.
If you’ve been thinking about adopting, now is the time.
Make this our best winter yet. Adopt a storm survivor.

💔Tied up. Lying on a pavement. Unable to move. This is how four chickens were found in Maitland.

They couldn’t walk, forage or seek shelter, and as prey animals who rely on movement to feel safe, they were in a constant state of fear and distress.

They were rescued because one member of the public saw it and spoke up.

They waited for us. Now they're waiting for you. 🐾❄️

Every day, animals arrive at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA needing safety, care and a second chance. On average, 75 unwanted, abandoned, injured and stray animals enter our care daily.

In recent weeks, that number grew even faster.
🌧️ During Cape Town's severe storms, our inspectors rescued 50 animals from the most heavily impacted areas. Many were cold, wet and exposed to the elements.
🐾 Just days later, a further 24 animals were brought into our care after being removed from an illegal backyard breeding operation in Dunoon.

While animals keep arriving, adoptions slow down during winter. Every adoption changes more than one life. It gives one animal a family and creates space for another animal in crisis to receive the care they need.

Benji is one of the dogs rescued during the storm.
He was found sheltering beneath rubble as floodwaters swept through the area. When his owner was located, they no longer wanted him.

Despite everything, Benji is still full of life. He's energetic, affectionate and eager to learn. But kennel life is proving hard on him. He needs space to run, people to love and a home of his own.

Benji is still waiting for someone to see what we see: a good boy who deserved better than being left behind. He survived the storm. Now he just needs someone to weather life with.
Benji is waiting for YOU. ❤️

If you’ve been thinking about adopting, now is the time.
Make this our best winter yet. Adopt a storm survivor.

Howlee is a sweet, affectionate and spirited 2-year-old Husky mix looking for a family to call her own. With her adventurous nature and love for people, she's happiest when she's included in family life, whether that's heading out for walks, exploring the outdoors or simply spending time with her favourite humans. 💙

As an active young dog, Howlee would thrive with a family familiar with the Husky breed and their needs. She's looking for a home with a large, secure garden where she can safely play and burn off energy. In return, she'll bring loyalty, companionship and plenty of love. 🐕

Howlee could happily share her home with children and may be able to live with another dog, subject to a successful introduction at the SPCA. Cat compatibility can be assessed on request.

🚨 150 Scorpions Rescued from Illegal Wildlife Trafficking Attempt 🦂

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA assisted the South African Police Service and Cape Nature following the discovery of 150 live scorpions that were allegedly being smuggled through Cape Town International Airport.

Acting on intelligence, SAPS members intercepted a suspect and, upon searching his luggage, discovered the scorpions concealed amongst his clothing. Each scorpion had been individually packaged and transported in conditions that raise serious animal welfare concerns.

The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 June 2026.

The rescued scorpions are currently in the safe care of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. We will continue to work closely with SAPS and Cape Nature to ensure that these animals receive appropriate care and that arrangements are made for their repatriation to their place of origin where possible.

Wildlife trafficking is a cruel and illegal trade that causes immense suffering to animals and threatens biodiversity. We commend the swift action of SAPS and Cape Nature in preventing these animals from disappearing into the illegal wildlife trade.

An elderly man stole a chicken and two pies. His sentence was twice as severe as the sentence handed down for Biscuit’s suffering. 💔

Three veterinarians agreed that Biscuit’s leg had to be amputated or that he had to be humanely euthanised. He was denied the care he urgently needed and left to deteriorate by his owner.

😠By the time we secured a warrant to remove him, it was too late to save him. Biscuit never got the chance to heal. 😢

This week, the man responsible pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to a fine of R3,000 or three months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for three years. Theft is wrong. 📢But how does stealing food attract a sentence twice as severe as allowing a living animal to suffer for weeks?

Our sincere thanks go to the Animal Welfare Society of SA and to Dr MacMullen, who personally examined Biscuit, made the difficult decision to end his suffering and gave evidence in this case.

Was justice served? Read Biscuit’s full story and decide for yourself https://pulse.ly/mjmbdcynqq
