Why did the chicken cross the road??? 🐓😂

To visit the best vet in town! 🏥🩺

This cheeky fellow wandered into our practice, straight off the street. While we don’t actively treat chickens every day, we couldn’t leave this little guy without some help.

We made sure he was well taken care of, fed, and safe while he was with us.

He has been safely surrendered to the SPCA, where he can receive the appropriate care and attention. 🐓❤️

Sometimes, compassion comes in unexpected forms — even when they have feathers! 🐔😂

🐾 SUSPECT YOU’VE BEEN EXPOSED TO RABIES?🐾
Don’t wait. Act immediately.

If you are bitten, scratched, or exposed to the saliva of an animal suspected of having rabies:

1️⃣ WASH THE AREA
Wash and flush the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
2️⃣ SEEK MEDICAL CARE IMMEDIATELY
Go to your nearest clinic, hospital or emergency department and clearly tell them you have had a possible rabies exposure.
You may require rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which can include a course of human rabies vaccine and, depending on the type of exposure, rabies immunoglobulin (RIG). In South Africa, RIG is available through district-hospital services when indicated.
3️⃣ DO NOT APPROACH THE ANIMAL
Do not try to catch or handle an animal suspected of having rabies. Contact your local/state veterinary or animal health services so the animal can be assessed safely.

⚠️ Do not wait for symptoms and do not delay treatment while waiting to see what happens to the animal.

Rabies infection can be prevented following exposure when the correct treatment is given promptly.

🐾 WHY IS WORLD RABIES DAY ON 28 SEPTEMBER? 🐾

The story goes back more than 140 years.

In 1885, Louis Pasteur and his colleagues achieved a major medical breakthrough. On 6 July 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Meister became the first person successfully vaccinated against rabies after being severely bitten by a rabid dog.

Louis Pasteur died on 28 September 1895, and this anniversary was later chosen for World Rabies Day in recognition of his contribution to rabies prevention.

1885 → 2026. 141 years later, the fight continues.

🐾WOULD YOU RECOGNISE RABIES?🐾

Rabies doesn’t always look the way we expect.
An infected animal may become aggressive — but rabies can also cause unusual behaviour, excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, weakness, loss of coordination or paralysis.

⚠️ Possible warning signs include:
• Sudden or unusual changes in behaviour
• Unexplained aggression or unusual friendliness
• Excessive drooling or salivation
• Difficulty swallowing
• Weakness or poor coordination
• Progressive paralysis

Never approach or handle an animal you suspect may have rabies. Avoid contact and seek professional advice immediately.

According to the NICD:
🔹 Rabies is 99.9% fatal once clinical signs develop, but it is 100% preventable through vaccination and appropriate treatment after exposure.
🔹 Any mammal can contract rabies — including dogs, cats, livestock, wildlife and people.
🔹 Vaccinating our pets helps create a protective barrier for our families and wider community.
