A huge thank you to everyone who supported our presentation/talk yesterday.

We managed to cover a huge amount of subject matter and share valuable information - so thank you to everyone involved! We did run horribly overtime lol! But so much information to share!!

Also, I would like to give a special thank you to Charlie Harper for all her help in setting up and packing everything away, and for her valuable techno assistance!

Arguing for nonaversive training, you have to make sense and give reasoned arguments, and of course, everything in the world has a counter argument (because there are very few absolutes), and every one of these will be thrown at you.

The problem is that the rules of making reasoned arguments often don’t apply to balanced trainers. Not all of them (some do give reasoned arguments), but there’s a seemingly never ending supply of aversive trainers.

You can literally start up today, use some force, and appear like you are dog training. What you are actually doing is cohesive control. You don’t need to be aware of the many side effects or consequences, you can just make the dog fear doing something and call it training.

Being a positive reinforcement-based trainer (avoiding the use of aversives) is more difficult. You have to work stuff out. You need to be logical and systematic. You have to be aware of other influences in the environment. You have to use management and control (as best you can) the environment and the reinforcers of behaviour. With some dogs it’s a breeze, but with others it’s far more difficult. I understand why people use aversives, it’s easier for them.

But this gives us a tsunami of people with very little knowledge shouting down the more limited numbers of people who actually study behaviour and must get results without the use of fear or force. Knowledgeable, skilled people will always be hugely outnumbered by others, otherwise it wouldn’t really be a skill.

I’m quite good at arguing my case, but it often feels like trying to reason with an angry mob, and it’s exhausting. It’s pretty difficult to reason people who don’t use much reason.
