A new peer-reviewed study analyzing commercial dog and cat foods found multiple mold toxins present across all diets, with higher levels in foods containing more cereal ingredients like corn🌽, wheat🌾, barley, oats, and rice🍚. Researchers detected 63 different compounds⚠️, with common toxins such as DON, zearalenone, and fumonisins often appearing together at low levels.

While all amounts were below safety limits, the study highlights uncertainty around long-term and combined exposure. Pets are exposed to multiple toxins at once, and the effects of these mixtures over time are still largely unknown. Broader research suggests some mycotoxins may act additively or synergistically, potentially amplifying their impact, and have been linked to immune and gut changes in animal models.

Contaminated corn🌽, in particular, has been associated with some of the largest pet food recalls and highest reported pet death events in modern history. Notably, the Midwestern Pet Foods SPORTMiX recall was linked to over 130 dog deaths and 220 illnesses, while a Sunshine Mills recall affected multiple brands. Corn’s susceptibility to heat, humidity, and poor storage makes it a common source of aflatoxin contamination.

🐶🦷 Bad dog breath usually isn’t “just dog breath” — it’s often an imbalance in the mouth microbiome.

Inside your dog’s mouth are billions of bacteria. When the wrong ones dominate, they break down food and release smelly sulfur compounds (that rotten egg smell 🤢).

A healthy oral microbiome helps keep these odor-causing bacteria under control.

In a recent double-blind, placebo-controlled study, dogs were given a postbiotic derived from bacterial fermentation (including Bacillus subtilis strains) for 14 days. Breath was measured using both gas analysis and human scoring. Dogs receiving the postbiotic showed about a 26% reduction in bad-breath compounds compared to placebo, while the placebo group worsened.

The takeaway: supporting the oral microbiome may help improve breath, not just cover it up.

That’s why researchers are studying probiotics and postbiotics for oral health, to help rebalance the bacteria at the source of odor. Certain strains like Bacillus subtilis can help shift the microbial environment and reduce odor-causing activity linked to that “rotten egg” smell.

Important note: sudden or severe bad breath can also be linked to underlying issues like dental infection, kidney disease, diabetes, or GI problems.

A new peer-reviewed study published in BMC Veterinary Research found that daily Spirulina supplementation supported multiple areas of health in working dogs, especially at the higher dose of 0.08 g/kg body weight per day over 7 weeks. Researchers tested two doses, 0.04 g/kg and 0.08 g/kg, and observed improvements in cholesterol, inflammation, antioxidant status, gut health, immune defenses, and liver related markers. Dogs receiving Spirulina had up to 31% lower “bad” cholesterol, 39% lower oxidative stress, 47% more beneficial gut bacteria, and a 65% increase in a key gut immune defender. Researchers also found signs of a stronger gut lining and lower inflammatory markers. Some benefits appeared within 3 weeks, with the biggest improvements seen by week 7.
