How insane are the colors on this Lowlands Copperhead? 🤯 These guys are a highly venomous Australian elapid native to Victoria, and don’t share any similarities with American Copperheads (a far less venomous, small, stout viper). This big female was easily the largest I’ve ever seen!

The Sonoran Coral Snake (Micruroides euryxanthus) is one of the most iconic venomous snakes in the United States, and one that I’ve wanted to see ever since I was a little kid. The spectacular tricolored banding that inspired the “red touching yellow will kill a fellow” rhyme (don’t use outside the U.S.!) and the coral snake’s status as North America’s only elapid species cements this species as unique, important in pop culture and herpetology alike, and utterly gorgeous.

One of my favorite examples of the variation in appearance that two individuals of the same species can have is this one: two Prairie Rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis) from Colorado that I found several feet away from each other. Despite living in the exact same environment, the large female is extremely light and the small male is extremely dark. How interesting is that!

This Eastern Tiger Snake may be the 4th most venomous snake in the world, but any snake would have been unhappy after being rescued from a homeowner’s garden and taken for a drive to suitable habitat for a relocation. One good natured strike was all our brave cameraman got this time 🤣

The California Kingsnake is one of the most iconic nonvenomous snakes in the world, easily recognizable in the wild and highly popular in the pet trade. While they can vary from black to brown with or yellow, cream, or white bands or stripes, there is no more classic look than this San Diego County individual in black with the light yellow bands. What a snake!

The Western Coachwhip is an extremely vibrant species of coachwhip native to parts of the midwestern United States and easily one of my favorites. Long, agile, smart, and stunning, coachwhips can be almost completely pink or even banded like this gorgeous adult. They are nonvenomous and harmless to humans, but they are a formidable predator to the local rodent population! 😅

You can’t deny the camouflage on this Banded Rock Rattlesnake - it even blends right in to the concrete of the road 😶‍🌫️ these guys are a small species of rattlesnake native to Southern Arizona, and are absolutely spectacular!
