Flystrike is the summer emergency every rabbit owner should know about. It moves frighteningly fast in warm weather.

The prevention is unglamorous and it works: check your rabbit's rear end daily (twice daily in hot, humid spells), keep bedding dry, and clear soiled corners every day. A clean, dry hutch gives flies nothing to be interested in.

If you spot maggots, or your rabbit seems suddenly quiet and off food in summer, call your vet straight away. It's an emergency, not a wait-and-see.

Rabbits cope with cold far better than heat. A warm June afternoon is harder on them than a frosty January morning.

On hot days: move the hutch and run into shade before midday, top up water often (a ceramic bowl stays cooler than a bottle), and try a frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel for them to stretch out against.

Run time still matters in summer. Just shift it to early morning or evening, once the heat has gone out of the day.
