Step into a wolf’s den! 🐺 This is a keeper's-eye view of 7-day-old American Red Wolf pups at the Saint Louis Zoo Wildlife Reserve. 🐾

This spring, keepers entered the habitat to collect pups for the Zoo’s first-ever cross fostering effort with one of the world’s most endangered species. Just hours after this video was taken, three of the pups traveled to North Carolina, where they joined a new American Red Wolf family in the wild! Read their story at stlzoo.org/wolves.

Exciting intros are happening at Jungle of the Apes! 🦍 All four members of the Zoo’s bachelor gorilla troop are getting acquainted in the indoor public habitat.

This is a big milestone for western lowland gorillas Gus, Bukavu, Zachary and Kayin. Forming new bonds and creating a new social hierarchy mimics how complex bachelor gorilla troops develop and behave in the wild.

The Zoo’s troop is already playing and foraging together—encouraging signs their intro is going well! Sightings of the group may be irregular as they continue to bond at their own pace.

Earlier this year, three American Red Wolf pups made Saint Louis Zoo history.

Born at the Zoo’s Wildlife Reserve, the pups were selected for a remarkable journey to the wild as part of a cross fostering effort with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The pups were successfully introduced to a wild wolf family on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge this spring.

That moment when you look at a lemur and they start looking back. 👀

Even if you've never locked eyes with a Coquerel's Sifaka, you've probably heard, smelled or sensed them! Tomorrow, Sept. 3, guests can experience the Zoo with ALL their senses during See Like Me Day. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, the See Like Me Resource Fair will offer tactile and sensory activities from St. Louis area partners supporting the blind and visually impaired communities, as well as a guest raffle and Zoo bingo. How can reproductive research protect a future for babirusa? Let’s find out!

In collaboration with Mizzou Animal Sciences, the Zoo partnered with graduate student Clara Henry to study babirusa reproductive biology. By analyzing hormone concentrations, this research helps us better understand ovulatory cycles of female babirusa—critical information to ensure a future for babirusa in human care and in the wild!

Zoo-born wolf pups have joined a wild family in North Carolina! 🐾

Three American Red Wolf pups born at the Saint Louis Zoo Wildlife Reserve have been fostered into a wild Red Wolf family through collaborative efforts with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and AZA SAFE American Red Wolf Program.

The pups were placed with their new family in April. Recent updates from USFWS confirm all three wolves were accepted into the litter and continue to grow alongside their wild siblings!

This is the Zoo's first-ever cross-foster for American Red Wolves, a conservation strategy that swaps pups born in professional care with pups born in the wild to introduce critical genetic diversity into one of the world's most endangered animal populations. With fewer than 40 American Red Wolves remaining in the wild, every pup matters.
