Chestnuts and Ergots
These harmless callous-looking growths are made of keratin, similar to hooves. They are considered to be remnants of toes from the prehistoric horse. They continue to grow through the horse's life. While not necessary, some people like to trim them. The recommended way is to soften them with water or cowboy magic and peel them. You may want to ask your Farrier to trim ergots. Never trim below the surface of the skin.
