Nitama, the cherished cat stationmaster of Kishi Station in Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture, passed away on November 20, 2025, at age 15.
Originally rescued as a kitten from beneath a train car, she went on to serve alongside and later succeed the legendary Tama, becoming a symbol of warmth and whimsy on the Kishigawa Line.
More than a mascot, Nitama helped revitalize local rail tourism, welcoming passengers with calm grace and drawing global attention to a once-quiet station.
And in a country where trains are serious business, Nitama reminded everyone that joy and gentleness have a place, too ❤️
