Cats Have Been Sitting on Their Humans for 4,000 Years

Ancient Egyptian artifacts have delivered the ultimate receipt: cats have never once cared about personal space. Two small statues show a cat sitting, and another standing, right on top of a reclining human figure, one perched on the chest, the other planted on the torso like it owns the place. These are not modern memes. They are the real thing, roughly 4,000 years old.

The post that shared them nailed it, joking that cats have been "bordering their humans" for millennia. No boundaries, no shame, just pure feline entitlement. The joke practically writes itself, but the record backs it up. It tracks with everything we already know about cats in ancient Egypt.

Back then, cats were far more than pest control, they were companions, status symbols, even sacred. Tomb paintings regularly show them under chairs, curled on laps, weaving through daily life. The goddess Bastet was depicted as a cat or a cat-headed woman. Households treated their pets with real affection, sometimes even elaborate burials.

The statues, though, push past mere symbolism. A cat literally sitting on a person feels less like formal iconography, more like an ancient version of "get off my face while I'm trying to sleep." There is nothing ceremonial about a cat on your sternum. It is oddly, hilariously relatable across four millennia.

Modern cat owners get it instantly. The response was pure recognition, early-morning wake-ups, butts planted in faces, the universal experience of a cat deciding your body is its personal furniture. Four thousand years, countless dynasties, one unshakable feline attitude. Some things simply never change.
