EHV-1 ALERT
Not related to the Texas/Oklahoma outbreak

Equine Disease Alert
A Washington County horse tested positive for Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) this week. The 12-year-old warmblood mare was first examined by a veterinarian on Tuesday, December 9 and they noted weakness in the hind limbs and decreased a**l tone. The veterinarian submitted an EHV-1 test, and results were reported Thursday, December 11. The horse was treated with anti-inflammatory medicine and has significantly improved in the last 48 hours.

The owner reported self-quarantining the positive horse on December 9 and the Board issued an official quarantine when results were reported on December 11. The affected horse is kept at a boarding barn with 27 other horses. All horses at the barn are considered exposed to EHV-1. The positive horse will need to have its temperature checked twice daily for the next 21 days. The Board will release the quarantine if the affected horse's temperature does not exceed 102°F during the sampling window.

This case is unrelated to the EHV-1 outbreaks reported in Texas and Oklahoma; test results identified a different viral strain and the horse has no known exposures.

We have confirmed exposure risk for horses that attended the WPRA Finals on November 4-9 or the 377 Arena on November 15 and 16. If your horse was at either location, quarantine immediately for the next 14 days and do not leave the premises during this time.

If you have an appointment with us, please do not unload your horses. You may come inside to check in, but keep your horses in the trailer until a staff member comes out to assist you. This helps protect every horse on the property.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗘𝗛𝗩 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀
EHV spreads through nose to nose contact, shared buckets or tack, contaminated trailers, airborne droplets from coughing or snorting, and from people who handle exposed horses.

𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵
- Fever (Over 101.5)
- Nasal discharge
- Lethargy
- Hind end weakness or wobbliness
- Loss of tail tone or urine dribbling

Some cases progress to the neurological form, EHM, which is a medical emergency. Take temperatures twice daily and monitor closely.
