A retrospective: I would like to note it here in this post. While I aim for scientific accuracy I am not immune to human error and have and will more than likely make mistakes and own those. Recently I had stuck by the 90 gallon (48x24x18 inch) terrarium minimum standard and while I will not shun anyone who uses this my plans are to move all beardies that are Vitticeps or lower than 50% Barbata content into 4x2x2, 120 gallon terrariums. Another failure I had committed in the past was as a younger keeper by keeping my precious Lizzabeth “Biggems” Decher in a 40 gallon top opening Aquarium instead of a 4x2x2 for nearly 8-10 years before correcting her into a 4x2x2 after learning the standards, and even at that time I had zero knowledge of T5 UVBs, so I did not do everything correctly the first time, but near the end of her life a lot of my outlook changed. I had also failed by feeding her fruits often which could have in retrospect have lead to the GI cancer issues. I have learned a lot over the years that have been corrected and I’d like everyone to know full transparency that I am not perfect and never will be as I fall short through human error as we all do, but I strive to do the best I can and put out as accurate information as I can. Should information change I will update ASAP. I hope that many can understand that this is part of growth as a keeper and a human is to correct the wrongdoing of the past, wether it’s from oneself or the mistakes of our predecessors in the industry.

As my first male Barbata is planned for arrival in October I plan to update Barbata care as much as I can for the public and change the care as often as I can to fit their different dynamics of living.

Decision made! In October the official decision to bring in 1 Male Pogona Barbata for Phase 1 of project Amphibolurus Barbatus has been reached with a female planned for Spring-Early Summer 2027. As they mature very slow compared to Vitticeps the 1st Phase will be pairing Yoshi with the male Pure Barbata in 2027-2028 for her ONLY pairing before retirement as she establishes a 62.5% Barbata line! This line is expected to be priced at $500+ depending on the dragon. I will be keeping 1 male out of this 62.5% clutch for a hopeful 81.25% line with a pure female Barbata later down the line as part of Phase 2 before the third and final phase of 100% Pure breeding. I will keep everyone updated on how different care is of Barbatas as arisarids and I keep discussing Barbata vs Vitticeps in captivity.

A good talk I like to have with people is on the topic of Pogona Barbata vs Pogona Vitticeps. What I’ll say is that I’ve had a lot of individuals note that there are no differences between the two largest species of Pogona, some of which are breeders, so I’ll go ahead and note several differences in the two species.

1: Ossification - Bone records show a heavy bone density in Pogona Barbata over Pogona Vitticeps.

2: Length - When I refer to the ‘Largest’ Pogona species I often refer to weight, but in the length and skeletal structure goes to the Barbata on this. Barbatas have typically the longest frame with rare cases hitting 26 inches long and most cases 24 vs Vitticeps average 18-20 inches.

3: Weight- Oh boy, I’ve ruffled feathers with this one before, but Vitticeps are undoubtedly heavier and chunkier vs Barbata’s lean, muscular frame. Barbatas often weigh about 2/3-3/4 the weight of a Vitticeps.

4: Types of living- This one is simple. Barbatas are mostly Arboreal (tree dwelling) and Vitticeps are more ground dwelling.

5: Body structure- Barbatas have narrower, flatter heads than Vitticeps broad, wide, fatty head and different shaped fat pads. Barbatas also have squarish beards vs Vitticeps rounded beards. Barbatas have a lot more spikes and nasty, brutal raised tail ridges.

6: Maturity- Vitticeps often mature by 2 years old, but Barbatas are very, very slow at maturing. The males can be mature between 28-48 months old vs females between 36-48 months old.

7: Attitude- Barbatas are undeniably the most territorial and aggressive species of Pogona vs the more laid back Vitticeps.

8: Mouth- This one is simple, from what many herpitologists and vets in Australia have noted is that Barbatas purely have yellow mouths vs Vitticeps have yellow or pink mouths.

There’s probably more I can dive into, but that’s the gist of it. Despite how new I am to the breeding hobby, my focus isn’t and will not be on Vitticeps and instead on the other 3 legally obtainable species of Pogona where my decade of research is. I am focusing on a repopulation effort for these species.

Discussion: Red Monsters (none of these pictured dragons are Red Monsters)

As many know, I do not do Red Monsters, and the reason for this isn’t anything in particular other than they do not peak my interest, rather I choose to focus on the lesser known, more niche bearded dragon species. I used to believe that the market was over saturated with Red Monsters, but what I learned after talking with valkyrie.dragons and hearing some of sapphirexdragons_ shorts is a rather different take that I’ve come to agree with. There’s an abundance of unhealthy, and structurally unsound Red Monsters breeders, and this matches up with my vets noting how many unhealthy Red Monsters and Zeros they’ve seen in their decades of care. It is careless breeding and not paying attention, or just avoiding caring about the overall health of the dragons. While I may not per se want a Red Monster, many of my beliefs (that have changed) on Red Monsters were under false and uniformed pretenses. There are very few breeders that I recommend for Red Monsters, Black Blood/Gods/dark lines and I only have 3 breeders that I recommend for these (Valkyrie Dragons, Sapphire Dragons, and arisarids) I have personally talked with Valkyrie and Aris about this and will be talking with Sapphire so that I may understand more on a morph I’m a little less knowledgeable on since I plan to work with their founder/partial founder species (Pogona Barbata).

Discussion: Pogona Minor and its subspecies

As many know, after I start breeding Barbatas, I will also move into Pogona Minor Minor. There has been a ton of failed attempts at establishing them in the U.S. trade and I plan on successfully breeding them. Why do I think this is?

1:A misunderstanding of the species and its subspecies - Pogona Minor has 3 total diverse species and a few rare crossbreeds of them. This species is small, but very nomadic and love traveling, so breeders failed in the understanding of care.

2: Requirements- Due to a lack of information on Pogona Minor we failed in the U.S. at maintaining the required care. Despite their small size, they need more room than any other Pogona Species I recommend a minimum of a 6x2x2 but at the more realistic end a 10x2x2 per P. Minor. Humidity ranges are different attitudes are different amount other things that we must study to keep this species.

3: So many subspecies, so much confusion- With 3 subspecies there’s also a lot of hybridization in the wild. Many breeders get confused and just label all of the subspecies as P. Minor Minor instead of P. Minor Minima or P. Minor Michelli or a hybrid, and all three subspecies have similar but unique care, especially with the island sub species of P. Minor Minima. Slight differences can have subtle to huge impacts on different care regiments.

This said, I will be studying more on P. Minor during my P. Henrylawsoni and P. Barbata breeding years to understand more before taking on what I consider may be the most difficult species of Pogona to own.

It is with immense happiness that I announce that Bon Bon, after successfully establishing a line of 25% Barbatas and her first year of breeding is officially retiring from breeding! Despite only breeding once, with our only male (Hercules) in brumation she will be 6 years old next year this raising the risks of problems during her gravid state. She will NOT be fore sale and will live out her life with us, being pampered and loved alongside her daughter, Yoshi! She started it all and I’m ever so proud of her for being Momma Bon!

More discussion about P. Barbata, P. Henrylawsoni, and P. Minor. As the handful of breeders that I keep in contact with know, I plan Project Amphibolurus Rankini 2027 and Project Amphibolurus Barbatus 2028-2030. This said, due to what I expect may be high demand of Pogona Barbata and Pogona Henrylawsoni, I will NOT be highly producing them in my first breeding year for each species. I plan on only doing 1-2 pairings per species per year and maxing out with only 3-5 clutches when I can do so per year. I do NOT want this to become a job as I do believe it would make me lose my passion for repopulating the rarer species and I do not want that. I love the rarer species and will be avoiding breeding pure P. Vitticeps, only aiming in the future of having 50%+ Barbata Hybrids, 100% Barbatas, 100% Henrylawsoni, 100% P. Minor. I believe P. Vitticeps is already heavily populated and established, so I will be avoiding them and any morph associated with them unless decided otherwise. My goal is conservation and preservation of the rarer species in the U.S. This is the main reason I got into breeding was for P. Barbata and P. Minor. I think it would heavily benefit the bearded dragon community to have them available for both educational purposes and for genetic diversity.
