PUPPY PARENTS… START GROOMING INTRODUCTION EARLY! 🛁🐾
Happy National Dog Day! What better way to celebrate our dogs than by helping them feel safe, comfortable and confident during everyday care?
One of the best things you can do for your new puppy is teach them that bathing, brushing and being handled are normal parts of life.
This is Sir Ulrich, and while he’s young, I’m taking the time to introduce him to the sights, sounds, sensations and handling that come with routine grooming.
Why start early? 👇
🛁 Bathing: I intentionally let him hear and see the running water while I wash him. The goal is to teach him that the sound and sensation of water aren't something to fear. Using comfortably warm water and keeping the experience positive can help create a good association with bath time.
🐾 Paw handling: Getting puppies comfortable with having their paws touched is incredibly important. It can make nail trims, brushing, bathing and other routine care much easier as they grow.
🐶 Face handling: Gently handling your puppy's head and face helps desensitize them to being touched in areas that may need attention during grooming or veterinary visits. Always be gentle and especially careful around the eyes.
🥰 Towel drying: Don't underestimate the power of a little puppy snuggle! Comforting your puppy while drying them can help them feel safe and supported throughout the experience. And remember, make sure your puppy is completely dry so they don't become chilled.
🪮 Brushing: Brushing can actually become a relaxing experience for your puppy when introduced correctly. Think of it as a little massage! Use a soft, puppy-appropriate brush and gentle strokes so brushing doesn't become associated with discomfort. Don't forget those legs, paws and face, while being extra careful around the eyes.
When puppies learn these routines in a calm, comfortable and positive environment, routine care can become a much easier transition for the puppy, their pet parent AND the professional caring for them!
Start small. Go slow. Keep it positive. And make grooming a GOOD experience from the beginning!
