🐾 🐾 OREO, SPARROW & WILMA 🐾🐾

Oreo was pregnant when she was brought to us on January 6, 2026. She was found out in the cold, alone, near Newport Glen apartments. After having food, shelter and a warm bed to sleep in, she gave birth to 2 beautiful kittens on January 11. She is just over 1 year old. Now, she is ready to find her forever home! Oreo is a social kitty who enjoys fluttering about the cat room, and trying to find the sunniest spot to enjoy a cat nap. She is petite kitty compared to most of the other cats in her room! She would do well in a home with other friendly cats and older respectful children. Dogs unknown. If you’re interested in adopting Oreo, head to the shelter during business hours and fill out an application. Adoption fee is $80.

Sparrow is one of Oreo’s kittens! He was born on January 11, 2026 putting him at just shy of 6 months. This little guy is just as sweet as his mama. He made himself right at home with all of his friends in the kitten room! Sparrow is a playful, loving and affectionate dude, who would do well in a home with other playful kitties as well as older, respectful children. Dogs unknown. If you’re interested in adopting Sparrow, head to the shelter during business hours and fill out an application! Adoption fee is $120.

Last but not least, our sweet Wilma. Wilma was rescued from a condemned home in Campbell and brought to us on April 15, 2026. She is around 3 years old. Wilma is a laid back, friendly girl who has blossomed into a loving & affectionate kitty cat while in our care. She prefers love & snuggles over playtime, making her the perfect lap cat candidate. She does get along well with the other cats in her room, too! She would do well in a home as the only kitty, or with other laid back cats or kiddos. Dogs unknown. If you’re interested in adopting Wilma, head to the shelter during business hours and fill out an application! Adoption fee is $80.

🐾🐾 Oreo, Sparrow & Wilma are all fixed, tested, up to date on all other vet care, including microchip.

🐾🐾You can visit them during shelter hours:

Wednesday/Friday: 2pm - 5pm

West Side Cats is in need of foster homes. We have taken in quite a few kittens over the past couple of weeks. We also presently have a few mom kitties that are nursing babies that need placed in a foster home. Our requirements are:

✨️✨️ A separate area, preferably a room, that the
kittens and/or mom with kittens can have
access to. Need to be kept separate
from other pets in home.
✨️✨️The availability to bring them to the
Shelter for check-ups and vaccines.
✨️✨️A commitment to foster until they can
be scheduled to be fixed, usually when they
are around 14 to 16 weeks old.
✨️✨️WSC will provide all food, litter and
other supplies during fostering.

If you can help us out, please stop in during our business hours to fill out a volunteer application. Fostering is a great way to volunteer and help socialize and prepare the kittens for permanent homes. Thank you🐾🐈🐈‍⬛🐾

Our hours are: Mon/Thurs. 4:00 to 6:00 pm
Wed/Fri. 2:00 to 5:00 pm

Address: 4305 Market Street

Today we received two distressing phone calls about dogs that had died out in the heat. One was from the dog’s owner who wanted us to come and pick up the body. The other was from YPD. One dog died on Parmalee on the North Side of Youngstown. The other dog died on Rutledge on the East Side of Youngstown.

The temperature reached 90 degrees making it impossible for dogs to even find a cool spot in the shade. Any dog tied outside for more than a few minutes was at risk.

These are the only two dogs that we know of. We fear and assume there are more that we will never know about. What happened today is unacceptable. Humanity, empathy and common sense ….where have they gone? This is beyond cruel. To let a dog die this way is pure evil. The agony and panic that they went through is heartbreaking to think about.

Anyone who witnesses animal cruelty or neglect should contact Animal Charity of Ohio Humane Agency and/or your local police department immediately. Follow this link to report abuse:

Experiencing heatstroke is a painful, frightening, and physically agonizing process for a dog. Because dogs can only cool themselves by panting and through their paw pads, their bodies rapidly reach dangerous core temperatures (above 105°F). This overwhelms their system and causes their internal organs to shut down. The progression of a dog’s suffering during a fatal heatstroke typically includes the following stages:

Panic and Extreme Thirst: The dog will frantically pant and drool as their body struggles to cool down. Their heart rate spikes to dangerous levels, and they will feel dizzy and intensely thirsty.

Discoloration and Shock: As dehydration sets in and the circulatory system begins to collapse, the dog’s gums and tongue will turn bright red or purple from a lack of oxygen.
Internal Breakdown: Tissue begins to die, leading to violent, often bloody, vomiting and diarrhea. The dog will experience severe confusion, staggering, and total physical weakness.

Organ Failure and Seizures: As the brain swells and blood flow to vital organs decreases, the dog may suffer from uncontrollable seizures and eventually lose consciousness.

Coma and Death: The central nervous system shuts down, leaving the dog in a coma before their heart and respiratory system ultimately fail.Heatstroke is a highly time-sensitive medical emergency that escalates from the first signs of excessive panting to fatal organ failure in a matter of minutes.

If you want to learn more about recognizing the early warning signs or how to safely cool an overheating pet, the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine outlines essential heatstroke protocols.

Stray cat overpopulation continues to affect our community every year, especially during kitten season. Spaying and neutering remains the most effective way to reduce the number of homeless cats and prevent unwanted litters before they start.

Our Feline Fix Fest offers low-cost spay and neuter services for trapped, homeless, and pregnant cats.

Spay or neuter: $30
No appointment necessary for trapped cats
Drop-off is Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Limit two cats per person
Vouchers must be purchased before the day of surgery

If a cat has not received a rabies vaccine, one will be given at the time of surgery.

🐾 SUGAR COOKIE, KING TOEBEANS, RYDER, & NARIZ 🐾

⭑ Sugar Cookie was brought to us with her four siblings on June 10, 2025 after they were found huddled together outside of a house. She is just over 1 year old and is the picture perfect definition of a lovable, easy going kitty cat. She’s got beautiful tabby markings and sparkling gold eyes. She gets along extremely well with the other cats in her room and would do well in a home with other cats, as well as older, respectful children. Dogs unknown. She would make a wonderful companion, playmate and lap cat! If you’re interested in adopting Sugar Cookie, fill out an application during business hours. Her adoption fee is $80.

⭑ King Toebeans was brought to us on March 13, 2026 when one of our volunteers was taking trash out and a woman approached him with a carrier, handed it over and left. He is about 11 months old. We don’t know much about King Toebeans’ life prior to coming here, but this fella has got lots of love and s***k to give! He is a very social, playful cat who always enjoys a good window view of the outside. He would do well in a home with other cats as well as older respectful kiddos. Dogs unknown. If you’re interested in giving this king a throne of his own to lounge on, head over during business hours and fill out an application! His adoption fee is $120.

⭑ Ryder was a stray that was brought to us with his sister Irena (also available for adoption) on November 7, 2025. He is about 8 months old. Irena and Ryder went to a foster home together and now they are ready to find homes of their own! Ryder ADORES his sister Irena, and is very affectionate with the other cats in his room. He is a quieter boy who loves to snuggle and rub up on your legs. He would do well with other cats, as well as older respectful kiddos. Dogs unknown. If you’re interested in adopting Ryder, head to the shelter during office hours. Adoption fee is $120. (P.S. We’d love to see Ryder & Irena find a home together ♥️)

⭑ Nariz was found outside of St. Vincent’s, crying and injured before she was brought to us on June 9, 2025. This sweet girl is just over 1 year old. Nariz is a very friendly, easy going girl who is ready for a loving home of her own. She loves to bask in the sunbeams or nap on a windowsill during her days at the shelter. She is almost always one of the first kitties to greet you when you walk into her room! She would do well in a home with other cats and respectful children. Dogs unknown. If you’re interested in giving this sweet soul a windowsill of her own to nap on, head to the shelter during office hours and fill out an application. Adoption fee is $80.

🐾🐾 Sugar Cookie, King Toebeans, Ryder & Nariz are all fixed, tested, up to date on all other vet care, including microchip.

🐾 SALEM, TEDDI, KATHY & KYLIE 🐾

♥︎ Meet Salem! This 2-year-old boy came to us alongside his mom after their previous owner was evicted. The transition to shelter life was tough on Salem, so he spent time in a foster home to build confidence. Now, Salem is back with us and doing so much better! His mommy has already found her forever home, and now Salem is ready for his happy ending—a calm, patient home where he can continue to blossom. Salem would do best in a home with older, respectful children as well as other cats. Most likely no dogs. If you’re interested in adopting Salem, fill out an application during office hours. His adoption fee is $80.

♥︎ Teddi is a shy little girl who was found as a stray and brought to us on April 13, 2026. She is about 10 months old. She was very frightened upon arriving, and is still finding the confidence and courage to trust humans after what we can imagine would be a rough start to life on the streets. Teddi socializes with the other young cats in her room, and would most likely do well with other young cats who can show her how to be a kitten and have fun! If you’re interested in giving Teddi a forever home and a chance to have a loving family, fill out an application during office hours. Adoption fee is $120.

♥︎ Kathy was brought to us in December 2025, after her previous owners moved out of their home and left Kathy & her sister Kylie out in the cold. This 5 month old sweetheart is everything you can want in a kitten. She is playful, lovable and happy! She and her sister both have very social personalities and are always in the mood for a good snuggle or chasing each other around the kitten room. Kathy would do well in a home with other playful cats, as well as respectful children. Dogs unknown. If you’re interested in adopting Kathy, fill out an application during office hours. Adoption fee is $120.

♥︎ Kylie is a copy and paste of Kathy, just with different colored fur! She is 5 months old and is a very social, lovable girl. She loves to play with her sister as well as the other kittens in her room. She would do well in a home with other cats as well as older, respectful children. Dogs unknown. If you’re interested in adopting Kylie, fill out an application during office hours. Adoption fee is $120.
