*****IMPORTANT NOTICE*****

AEC has been providing overnight housing for stray animals for quite some time. Being the only overnight emergency veterinary clinic between Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, our facility has become increasingly busier over the years. As a result, we no longer have the capacity to provide overnight accommodations for stray animals.

Effective July 1st we will no longer be able to accept stray animals for overnight housing. If you encounter a stray animal, please reach out to animal control in your area.

This is not an attempt to scare pet owners but we are seeing a rise in critical cases and animal deaths related to heat stroke/ heat exhaustion. This is 100% preventable. Please protect your pets!

🚨Warning Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs🚨

Recognizing the stages of overheating early can save your dog's life.

Early Signs (Heat Exhaustion):
Heavy/Incessant Panting: The dog's primary method of cooling, which intensifies and doesn't slow down.Excessive Drooling: Saliva may become thick, sticky, or foamy.Red or Pale Gums: Gums and tongue turn bright red; pale or blue gums indicate shock.
Restlessness: Pacing, whining, or desperately seeking cool surfaces to lie on.

Severe Signs (Heat Stroke):Coordination Issues: Stumbling, wobbly legs, or dizziness.Vomiting/Diarrhea: May include blood.Collapse or Coma: Extreme weakness, inability to stand, or unresponsiveness.Seizures: Severe neurological distress.

What To DoIf you suspect your dog has heat stroke, immediate action is required:
Move to a cool area immediately and get them to an air-conditioned environment.
Apply cool (not ice-cold) water to their body. Never use ice packs or rubbing alcohol, as this can constrict blood vessels and trap heat.
Offer small amounts of water, but do not force them to drink.Seek veterinary care immediately.

The temperature is supposed to reach 85 degrees today which means asphalt can be 130-145 degrees. Hot enough to cause second degree burns on dogs paw pads in a few short minutes. Even lighter services like concrete or sidewalks can still be 108 degrees. Always check before walking barefoot pets or consider boots, paw wax, short breaks or walking earlier in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. Please protect these babies. They depend on you.

Just a reminder to please leave your A.C. running if you have to leave your pets in the car for any period of time. It only takes a minute to be safe and less for something to go wrong.

Please be careful when enjoying your pets outside. Heat exhaustion is a real thing for animals. Make sure they have water, take shorter walks, find shaded areas to sit if you have to be outside. Please enjoy your pet babies this summer but do it safely.😊
