Collier County deputies in Naples, Florida arrested 23-year-old Jessica Deshomme after finding her dog, a 2-year-old Terrier Bully named Sparkle, dead inside an outdoor wire cage. The cage door had been wired shut so tightly that it took rescue personnel roughly half an hour to pry it open. Sparkle had reportedly been left in direct sun with no water as temperatures climbed past 100°F, and neighbors told investigators she'd been confined to that cage day and night for months, regardless of weather. A necropsy pointed to heat stress and dehydration as the cause of death. Deshomme has since been charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty and is due in court later this month.

Farm and working dogs have nutritional needs that most standard dog food isn't designed to meet. 🐕

Dogs that are active on a farm, whether they're herding, guarding, or just covering a lot of ground daily, burn significantly more calories than the average house pet and have higher protein and fat requirements to support that output.

If your farm dog is on the same bag of food as a dog that spends most of its time on a couch, it might be worth a second look. 👀
