Hey Buxmont Family,

Just a reminder that Buxmont Vet will be 🚫CLOSED🚫 from September 7 through the 13th. We’ll reopen on Monday, September 14th, at 9AM.

If your pet experiences an emergency while we’re closed, take them to BluePearl Levittown on your closest ER. If it’s something minor, there is Urgent Vet (by the Wegmans) and Pet Furst (by the Bonefish Grill).

We’re here today until 5pm and tomorrow 8-1pm.

1️⃣ A good appetite. Hunger is one of the last things to go, not the first.
2️⃣ A shiny coat. They may look good on the outside but the inside is a different story.
3️⃣ Normal energy at home. Some pets mask problems at home. Get them checked out just to be on the safe side.

1️⃣ Slowing down. They could be stiff, or they could be in pain. Either way, there are things you can do to improve their comfort.
2️⃣ Drinking more water. If you’re noticing them at the water bowl more than they used to be, it’s not normal. Get their blood and urine tested.
3️⃣ Sleeping more. Dogs and cats can sleep 12-18 hours per day, but if they’re suddenly more sleepy than usual, there’s a good chance something is wrong. Get them checked out.

1️⃣ Rawhide chews. Just don’t unless you like spending $10k on emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage.
2️⃣ Flea and tick products. If it isn’t natural or doesn’t require a prescription, don’t do it. The amount of BAD side effects I’ve seen to some of these is heartbreaking. Especially if dogs and cats live in the same household.
3️⃣ Heavily scented cat litter. Please don’t. Your cat hates this. Just scoop more frequently to control odors. Every time a toilet flushes in your house, go scoop the box!

1️⃣ Bad breathe - not always what you think it is.
2️⃣ Change in eating habits - eating more or less than usual, consistently, is worth a talk with your vet.
3️⃣ Hiding more - could be pain or something else out of balance.

Ignoring these things could lead to bigger problems.

1️⃣ Stress eat brownies or equivalent dopamine-inducing food.
2️⃣ Mind-spiral to worse case scenarios, especially at 3am.
3️⃣ Refuse to cry in front of them.
4️⃣ Remember we’re vets, order a new test, and stress more while we wait on results.
5️⃣ Take time off from work and feel guilty about it the entire time.

1️⃣ Don’t change the diet right away, even if you hate it.
2️⃣ Don’t assume that quiet means settled. Adults can take 1-3 months to adjust to a new home.
3️⃣ Don’t skip the initial exam or baseline bloodwork, even if the rescue/shelter told you they were “healthy.”

1️⃣ Whatever the commercials are telling you to be afraid of… I’m not using brands whose advertising is based on fear tactics.
2️⃣ An unbalanced diet for more than a month.
3️⃣ Any food that has a paragraph label and no recognizable food in the first 5 ingredients.

The most important thing a food can tell you.. isn’t usually on the label.

At least according to the Internet.
1️⃣ Vaccines. Highly unlikely, but you know what will kill your pet? Rabies.
2️⃣ Antibiotics. Probably not. But let that infection linger and learn about sepsis.
3️⃣ Your vet. Ok, technically we will if it’s appropriate and you consent to it, but that’s not the point.
🌿 Don’t let fear become a medical decision.

🔴 The staff at Buxmont Vet wishes everyone a safe, happy, and cool holiday weekend.

⚪️ If pets are joining you for outdoor activities, make sure they are staying cool and hydrated. If your dog or cat is paranoid of fireworks, get them in a safe place before it gets dark. If you have meds for them, you should probably be giving them now.

🔵 Buxmont Vet will reopen on Monday at 9am.
