I’ve posted this already but a reminder for people that didn’t see, PLEASE BE USING A FLEA PREVENTATIVE RIGHT NOW! I’ve been seeing so many fleas, especially this week. They are out and moving in towards the houses because it’s warm. “My dog has never had fleas” I’ve heard all week. It’s not impossible! Anytime you go outside or your dog goes outside, a flea can jump on and get a ride and then that’s all it takes-one flea. PLEASE get quality products from your vet. The stuff at Walmart, bomgaars, TSC is not quality, many of them aren’t even produced anymore. I can easily tell if your pet has had them for awhile- they will have flea dirt (flea p**p) in their fur. It’s a dead giveaway. One swipe of a flea comb will not tell you if you have fleas. They tuck in close to the skin and some are almost completely flat where they don’t get caught by the comb. Flea bathes and capstar are not preventative. That just kills what is on them, doesn’t kill what jumps back on. 10% of fleas are on your pet, the rest is in the environment. So PLEASE USE PREVENTIVE! And if you have fleas, treat all the animals in the home, because even indoor cats can get fleas

🚨 GROOMER PSA: WANT TO LEAVE YOUR DOG’S COAT LONGER FOR WINTER? READ THIS! 🚨

As temperatures drop, I hear this a LOT:
“I want to leave them longer so they stay warm!” ❄️🐶
And yes keeping your dog’s coat longer during the colder months is absolutely an option!

But here’s the important part:

LONGER COAT DOES NOT MEAN LESS GROOMING.

When you stretch out appointments, that extra length can quickly turn into tangles and mats. Add in moisture, dirt, sweaters, blankets, and everyday activity, and those tangles can become difficult or even impossible to safely brush out.

And once a coat is severely matted, your groomer may have no choice but to take it much shorter than you originally wanted. 😭✂️

So if you want that fluffy winter coat, keep it on a routine!

🐾Stay consistent with professional grooming
🐾Brush regularly at home
🐾 Make sure you’re brushing all the way to the skin
🐾 Pay extra attention to behind the ears, armpits, legs, and sanitary areas
🐾 Keep the coat clean and dry
🐾 Talk with your groomer about the length you want and how to appropriately maintain it.

And now for another winter favorite…

“My dog is shaking because their haircut is too short!”
Sometimes… they’re shaking because IT’S COLD! 😂❄️ truth is, your house temp may not change. It may even be adjusted to warmer. If they live inside, this is the temp you need to consider more when choosing their haircut, over the outdoor temps.

A longer haircut can provide some extra warmth, but it doesn’t make your dog immune to cold temperatures. When it’s chilly outside, consider shorter outdoor time, and other appropriate cold weather precautions.

Want to keep more length this winter? Don’t stop grooming, maintain it! ❤️

A healthy, clean, mat free coat will always be more comfortable than a long, neglected one.

If you need evenings or weekend availability, message Shawnna! She’s been doing some hours at the shop when I’m not there and is very flexible and has lots of openings! Take advantage of not needing to leave work to drop and pick up your pup!

PLEASE be putting/giving flea/tick medication on your pets. I’ve had a handful of dogs come in with fleas in the last month. This is the time of year when fleas start becoming noticed and start moving into the houses because it’s cooling down. PLEASE get your products from a vet. Products from grocery stores do not work near as well as from the vet. Collars also typically do not work besides one brand. A flea bath only kills what is on the pet, not all the fleas that jump back on once they get home. It takes months to fully get rid of fleas. It’s hard to see on thick coated dogs, so it’s just better to keep their monthly treatments up to date. Talk to one of the vets in town to get good products- Lewis and Clark vet, Animal Health Clinic, Vet Med Clinic, or one of your trusted vets out of yankton
