🎃🐾 Friday Fun Day: Halloween Spooks & Scaredy Dogs! 👻

Halloween is just around the corner, and our neighborhoods are filling up with spooky skeletons, creepy inflatables, witches, ghosts, and decorations that seem to come alive when the wind blows! 💀🕷️

While we humans enjoy the festive fun, some of our dogs might think those decorations are downright terrifying! 😱🧟

🐾 Training Tip: Keep Calm and Keep Walking!

If your dog barks, startles, or hesitates when passing a spooky decoration, your reaction matters! Stay calm, keep moving, and act as though everything is perfectly normal. Your confidence and relaxed attitude can help your dog learn that these strange sights aren't something to worry about.

🚫 What should you avoid? Immediately scooping your dog up, excessively comforting them, or making a big fuss over their reaction. Depending on the dog and the situation, this can unintentionally reinforce the behavior or make the scary situation seem even more significant.

✅ Instead, try this!
🐕 Keep your leash relaxed and your body language calm.
🚶‍♀️ Keep moving at a comfortable pace, without forcing your dog closer to something that frightens them.
👏 Reward your dog for checking in with you, staying calm, or choosing to move past the decoration.
🎃 If your dog is truly frightened, give them more distance and work up to these situations gradually.

Remember, the goal isn't to make your dog ignore their feelings. It's to help them build confidence and learn that they can handle new and unusual things with your support!

So, while you're out getting those steps in with your canine companion this Halloween season, have some fun, enjoy the spooky sights, and help your pup discover that not every ghost deserves a bark! 👻😂

Tell me in the comments: What's the weirdest thing your dog has ever decided was scary? 👇🐾

🐾 Bringing home a puppy or new dog can be exciting… and challenging! 🐾

That’s where Laura’s Proper Pets can help set you and your new pup up for success from the very beginning! ❤️

Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting little Yona and her super-fun owners for a New Puupy consultation. We reviewed their current setup and discussed adjustments that could make training and day-to-day life with a young dog smoother and more successful.

We talked about creating clear boundaries, structure, and routines, while also helping Yona build confidence through training.

Our New Puppy Consultations and Potty Training Consultations can cover:

🐶 Puppy safety & creating a puppy-friendly environment
🏡 Establishing structure, boundaries & household rules
💩 Potty training
🛏️ Crate training
🐕 Socialization & desensitization
🧠 Understanding normal puppy behavior
🎯 Enrichment & appropriate outlets
🎓 Training foundations & good manners
❓ Answering all those puppy questions that come up along the way!

And the support doesn’t stop when the consultation ends. Afterward, owners receive an emailed recap, a personalized training plan if desired, and ongoing support for questions by text or email as they continue working with their puppy.

I help you understand what your puppy needs and give you the tools to build good habits from the start. Because when it comes to puppies, the habits you build early can make a HUGE difference down the road! 🐾❤️

If you’re bringing home a new puppy or struggling with potty training, I’d love to help you get started on the right track!

🐾 TRAINING TIP: Building a Bomb-Proof Recall! 🐾

One of the most important skills you can teach your dog is a reliable recall—coming back to you when you call, even when something more exciting is happening.

If you want a recall you can count on, you have to build it!

🔹 Pick ONE cue.
Choose your recall word, such as “Come,” and use it consistently. Don’t use “Come,” “Here,” “Come here,” and your dog’s name interchangeably. Your dog needs to learn exactly what that cue means.

🔹 Start easy.
Begin in a low-distraction environment and practice from a short distance. Say “Come” and reward your dog with food when they come to you. Make coming to you worth it!

🔹 Gradually increase the difficulty.
As your dog becomes reliable, slowly add distance, distractions, new locations, and more tempting environments. Don't jump from practicing in the living room to expecting a perfect recall at the dog park!

🔹 Keep rewarding! 🦴
Especially while you're building the behavior, reward your dog every time they successfully respond to your recall cue. You want your dog thinking, “When I hear COME, good things happen!”

🔹 Don’t use your recall cue when you know your dog won't respond.
If your dog is too distracted or the environment is too difficult, make the exercise easier. Repeatedly saying “Come” while your dog ignores you can teach them that the word doesn't actually mean anything.

A bomb-proof recall doesn't happen overnight. It’s built through repetition, consistency, gradually increasing difficulty, and a history of reinforcement.

The goal is for “COME!” to become one of the most valuable words your dog knows. 🐕💨

Enjoy a video of little Miss Bella practicing her recall outside after fresh rainfall which always brings lots of distractions!

🎃🐾 Friday Fun! 👻🦴

Halloween is right around the corner, which means it’s time for the most important question…

What is your dog going to be for Halloween?! 😂🎃

Are they:
🧙‍♀️ A spooky little witch?
👻 A ghost who scares absolutely no one?
🍕 A slice of pizza?
🦸‍♂️ A superhero?
🎃 A pumpkin?
🐝 A ridiculously cute bumblebee?
…or are they giving you that look because they absolutely refuse to participate? 😂

Drop a picture of your dog in their Halloween costume in the comments! 📸🐶 Or comment on what you think they should be for Halloween even if they wouldn't wear it! 🫣

And if your dog has never worn a costume before, remember: some pups think costumes are hilarious… and others think you have completely lost your mind. 😆

Let’s see those Halloween pups! 🎃🐾👻

🐾 How does dog training actually progress?

A lot of people think dog training is simply giving a treat every time your dog does something right. But there’s actually a progression to good training!

1️⃣ First, we teach the behavior.
We introduce a cue and help the dog understand what we’re asking. Treats can be used to lure, shape, and reward the behavior as the dog learns. In the beginning, we want the dog to clearly understand, “When I hear this cue, this is what you’re supposed to do.”

2️⃣ Then, we start putting behaviors together.
Once your dog understands individual cues and what we expect from them, we can begin chaining behaviors together. Instead of rewarding every single step with food, we can use a verbal marker or praise along the way and reward the final result.

For example, your dog may need to come when called, sit, wait, and then go to place. Those individual skills become pieces of a bigger “job.”

3️⃣ We start adding other rewards.
As your dog becomes more confident and understands the behaviors, we can introduce other forms of reinforcement—verbal praise, affection, toys, play, access to something they want, or whatever your individual dog finds rewarding.

Food is a great training tool, but it isn't the only way to reinforce your dog!

4️⃣ Eventually, the goal is reliability—not dependence on treats.
As behaviors become well learned, we can gradually reduce food rewards while continuing to reinforce good choices in other ways.

The goal isn't to have a dog who only listens when you have a treat in your hand. The goal is to build a dog who understands what is expected, feels confident in those expectations, and can perform those behaviors even when food isn't present.

Good training is a process. Laura's Proper Pets Training helps you build the pieces, put them together, and gradually create reliable obedience. 🐾
