Nothing beats the excitement of seeing our bearded dragons enjoy a feast! We currently have a beautiful selection of healthy, active beardies waiting for their forever homes, alongside all the high-quality feeders and specialized supplies you need to keep your reptile friends thriving.

If you are thinking about bringing a new companion home, remember that bearded dragons are omnivores whose dietary needs change as they grow. Here at the Asylum, we recommend a routine of fresh greens in the morning to encourage healthy eating habits, followed by a protein-rich insect meal later in the day. It is common to accidentally overfeed young dragons, so offering a salad in the morning and protein a few hours later is the perfect balance to support their rapid growth during their first year. That tapers down when they reach adult size (average 18 to 24 inches) around 18 months of age.

We are passionate about reptile care and are here to help you get started on the right foot. Stop by the shop today to meet our beardies and let our knowledgeable staff assist you with everything you need for a long, happy life together!

What’s more adorable than tiny baby Mourning Geckos? Watching them enjoy their first meal!

We keep our hatchlings in smaller temporary setups to closely monitor their food intake and ensure they are thriving before transitioning them into their permanent appropriate full-sized enclosures.

It is important to note that, contrary to what some big-box stores may suggest, Mourning Geckos are not "desk pets" to be kept in tiny containers. They are obligate social animals and should never be housed alone; we recommend a group of at least 3–4 for the best results. They can survive alone, but will thrive when kept in groups. Because they are arboreal, vertical space is essential for climbing and establishing territory. For a group of 1–3, we recommend an 18-inch tall vertical terrarium as the absolute minimum.

Stop by the Asylum to see these little ones, learn more about their care, and check out all the unique "inmates" currently residing with us!

Our next Inmate Spotlight from the Asylum features the *Narceus gordanus*, commonly known as the Smokey Oak or Smokey Ghost millipede. These adorable, stout, slow-moving millipedes are native to the southeastern United States and make fascinating, long-lived pets. Here are some facts about them—stop in to learn more!

• **Size:** Adults grow between 2.4 to 4.7 inches in length and up to a half inch wide.

• **Lifespan:** With proper care, they can live for up to 10 years.

• **Habitat:** They require an enclosure with 4–6 inches of substrate consisting of organic topsoil, sphagnum moss, white-rotted hardwood, and a thick layer of decaying hardwood leaf litter. (Please avoid resinous woods like pine).

• **Diet:** These are detritivores; they feed on decaying organic matter, leaf litter, and rotting wood, supplemented with fresh vegetables (like carrots and squash) and a calcium source like cuttlebone to support healthy exoskeleton development.

Stop by the shop today to meet these unique, charismatic creatures and see what else we have in stock! We’re happy to help you get started with the perfect habitat setup.

Next vendor spotlight: We are absolutely thrilled and honored to introduce you to the incredible Kristen Nelson-Richards with Capital City Critters! She is a dedicated breeder of rare and beautiful species, including Sailfins, Water Dragons, Zebra Skinks, and Geckos.

Here is a bit about Kristen’s journey in her own words:

"I started keeping about 15 years ago when we bought some little turtles on a spring break trip to Florida. When I came back home with the turtles, I quickly realized I needed a bigger tank, which led to the acquisition of a bearded dragon. I visited my first expo to find supplies for my new bearded dragon, and it truly snowballed from there! Over the years, I spent 6 years dedicated to breeding chameleons and have been focused on breeding water dragons for the past 10 years. We also spent a significant amount of time doing non-official rescue and rehoming work—especially with iguanas—until we eventually ran out of space to accommodate more. Now, we focus our efforts on raising captive-bred social animals and breeding specific species that are no longer being imported into the USA, including Sailfins, water dragons, zebra skinks, and a variety of geckos."

We are truly honored to have Kristen with Capital City Critters joining us to share their deep expertise and their incredible animals with all of you! Make sure to clear your schedule and plan to stop by their booth at our November 28 expo to say hello, ask questions, and see their truly amazing work firsthand. It is a fantastic opportunity to meet a dedicated conservationist and breeder who puts so much love and care into her animals.

Meet our captive-bred baby Keel-Bellied Lizard! She is 1st generation captive bred from our adult group, feeding well on small crickets and roaches, and is already becoming quite comfortable with human interaction. We are excited to be anticipating more 2nd generation arrivals later this year from our 2025 group of kids.

Green Keel-Bellied Lizards (Gastropholis prasina) are stunning, bright green, arboreal reptiles native to coastal East Africa. They are rewarding, high-energy display pets for those looking for a smaller alternative to a tree monitor. With consistent handling from a young age, they can become wonderfully hand tame. Their diet is primarily insectivorous—thriving on gut-loaded crickets, Dubia roaches, mealworms, and waxworms—though they will occasionally enjoy crested gecko diets or other soft treats.

Interested in meeting this little one or seeing the rest of our incredible animals? Come visit the Asylum today!

TGIF! Today at Asylum Pets, we are excited to be highlighting one of the most fascinating creatures in our shop: the Vinegaroon, also known as the Whip Scorpion! If you are looking for a truly unique addition to your collection, these docile and surprisingly low-maintenance arachnids are an incredible choice. They are completely non-venomous and generally very safe to handle, making them a fantastic conversation starter. While they possess a natural defense mechanism—spraying a strong, vinegar-scented mist of acetic acid—they are incredibly chill and will only use this tactic if they feel severely threatened. With the right care and environment, these hardy companions have impressive lifespans, with males living around 8 years and females often thriving for up to 20 years!
We invite you to stop by the Asylum this weekend to meet these unique arachnids in person and chat with our knowledgeable team. While you are here, be sure to browse our entire selection of amazing animals and stock up on all the premium supplies, feeders, and habitat decor you need to keep your pets living their very best lives!

All 12 of these little ones have already completed their first shed and are looking great, with current weights ranging from a minimum of 4.6 grams to over 8 grams. Based on our preliminary observations, we believe we have at least 9 females in this beautiful clutch!

We will be sharing individual photos and updates periodically as we confirm their specific morphs, sexes, and their progress with taking their first meals. Please stay tuned to our page for more photos—you won't want to miss these tiny new additions!
