That “hyper” puppy you’ve got… the one that just will not switch off during the day… the one that turns into a bit of a manic little whirling dervish like they’ve had six cans of energy drink in the last 20 minutes…😅 yeah, that one.
It’s very easy to look at that and think you’ve just got a high energy puppy. That they need more doing, more exercise, more stimulation to “take the edge off”.
But a lot of the time, it’s not that at all. It’s a puppy that’s gone past the point of coping and doesn’t actually know how to stop anymore. They get more bitey, more zoomy, more all over the place… and it looks like they need more… when actually it’s the opposite.
I work on a lot of this with my clients and our puppy clubbers inside Puppy Club, because it comes up again and again. You’re trying to do the right thing, keeping them busy, filling their day… and instead of getting easier, they get harder to live with. That’s usually the point they’ve tipped into being overtired.
So if this sounds like your day right now, this is where I’d start.
▪Slow the day down a bit
▪Keep things shorter, not constant
▪Give them an actual space to switch off, not just lie there watching everything
▪Start noticing the early signs they’re getting tired
And try not to fall into the trap of thinking you just need to do more so they then crash out later… because they’re not actually learning anything by that point, they’re just absolutely knackered. They’re not learning to settle.
So by implementing what we’ve put above, over the next couple of days into the next week, you are going to start to see some real changes coming into your house and starting to get those calmer, more enjoyable puppy moments that you’ve been dreaming about. ❤
