Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is a developmental disease that occurs mostly in medium to large breed dogs (and other species) and affects the cartilage and underlying subchondral bone in multiple joints. While reported in other joints, it more commonly occurs in the shoulder (most common), elbow, tarsus, and stifle. It will initially occur in the juvenile patient but left untreated can have substantial long-term implications. Early surgical intervention is recommended in most cases.

Meet Ollie, he was an 8 month-old male Golden Doodle that presented for persistent right hind limb lameness that would worsen after activity. Please see the video of him walking pre-operatively and his weight shifting from the right to the left side. Pain was elicited on range of motion and palpation of the right stifle (knee). Radiographs were submitted for evaluation and showed a suspect OCD lesion with the medial femoral condyle. Radiographs can be useful in the diagnosis, however there are times when a CT scan is preferred. Surgical treatment was elected. Please follow the next post for the surgical treatment and outcome!

Always great to see new research and possible options for our pets. I am interested in seeing the details and results of this study. Having dealt with osteosarcoma in our own dog (Vinnie) and numerous patients, the diagnosis is always devastating. For those in the Ohio area check this out. Elbow dysplasia is a debilitating, congenital disease that can affect dogs of all sizes (although more prominent in medium and large breed dogs). While this can be a shocking diagnosis for owners, there are options that are available for treatment.

A comprehensive physical examination and advanced diagnostics are performed to confirm the diagnosis. See the associated images that details some of the facets of elbow dysplasia (fragmented medial coronoid process (FMCP), elbow incongruency (EI), Medial compartment disease (MCD) with cartilage wear, and humeral osteochondritis dissecans (OCD).

Treatment options available are both surgical and medical management. A multimodal/combination approach is typically the best for these cases, depending on which changes are diagnosed and the age of the dog. A newer, novel technique now available is radiosynoviorthesis (intra-articular injection - see image) Synovetin OA. This technique utilizes a single joint injection for 1 year or more of relief, with no systemic absorption. This new treatment is now being offered MedVet Columbus. Check out this new treatment!
