Shells breakdown over time.
A single hermit crab travels many miles over its life span adding wear and tear to their temporary housing.

Hermits also DO NOT make their own shells, so they constantly have to keep finding empty ones to replace the ones they outgrow or break.

If you visit the Keys, and see an empty shell, please leave it in place, it could be a hermit crabs lucky day for an upgrade.
