Today, the team from The Home Depot – Store 1956 in Machesney Park – came to Young at Heart to fulfill a grant from The Home Depot Foundation and create our beautiful new Rainbow Bridge Path. 🌈❤️

Tucked just off our walking trails, this peaceful path through the woods is a place to remember the beloved senior pets and wonderful people who have left their pawprints on our hearts.

Despite rain, heat, mud, and a storm, this incredible crew worked with smiles, laughter, and so much enthusiasm for our mission. They even got a tour of Smokey’s Haven and some extra puppy time when the storm rolled through!

We are incredibly grateful to Vicky, Amanda, M, Margaret, Justin, Jordan, Chad, Sarge, and Judy for giving their time, talent, and hearts to create a place that will mean so much to so many for years to come.

Thank you to this wonderful Home Depot team and The Home Depot Foundation for helping us create such a special place to remember those we will always carry with us. 🩷

❣️ ADOPTED & LOVED ❣️

Who knew that 7-year-old Alfie’s worst days would lead to the best days of his life?

What started as a “quick ER visit” turned into 12 nights of hospitalization, where Alfie (pictured top) was cared for by ICU nurse Gracey. In between caring for this sweet, sassy, and occasionally ridiculous little guy, she fell for his charm.

When she and partner Caitlin came to meet Alfie, they already knew about his medical needs and his quirks, and they were ready to take them on. So when things went well between Alfie and his new dog sibling, Bubba, they knew he was coming home.

After his last recheck at the hospital went well, Gracey set Alfie up in his old patient spot for one last day with the team while Caitlin was at home getting everything ready for him.

Then, after all those nights in the hospital, Alfie got to leave not as a patient, but as a beloved member of his new family. 🥹

A huge thank you to Alfie’s amazing foster family for loving and supporting him through his journey and helping him get to this moment. We are all wishing Alfie, Gracey, Caitlin, and Bubba a great deal of happiness together!! ❤️

This week’s is all about the kitties! 🐱

We already gave our dog rooms some much-needed makeovers. But our cat room makeovers had to be put on hold because life happened. Five of our seniors needed emergency hospital care, including surgeries and lengthy stays, and those funds went where they were needed most.

There is ONE thing we’d really love your help to replace right now: our cat room Ruggables.

Yeah, we know, we’re asking you to buy us rugs. How exciting. 😂 But these rugs have been through hell and back since we opened in 2019 - endless cat hair, dirty paws, spilled food, zoomies, scent rolls, and approximately eleventy billion hairballs.

Seven years of service later, they’re finally frayed, torn, and shrunken. They’ve earned their retirement, and we think our senior kitties have also earned something new - something just for them.

To our senior cats, it's not just a rug. They’re where they play, eat, stretch, explore, meet their new families, and feel safe while they wait for their forever homes. 😻

We asked, and you delivered! When we asked for help restocking one of our seniors’ favorite ways to take their meds, you came through - and then some.

And now, because of you, 10-year-old Big Papa is sitting pretty on his throne of Pill Pockets. 👑

7-year-old Mo is officially home with new paw-rent, Darlene!

When Darlene met Mo, she knew he might need a little time and patience to feel completely at home. She had exactly that to give him, along with a big yard and an even bigger heart. 🥹

And it sounds like Mo is settling in beautifully! He loves running around the yard, sniffing all the new scents, and then coming inside for some lap snuggles or a cozy spot beside Darlene on the sofa. He's met the whole family, and everyone got along just fine.

Darlene says she “couldn’t be happier” with her new little friend, and we couldn't be happier for her and Mo. ❤️ Happy life!

📣 We have some big Silver Paws Gala news to share!

After this year’s Enchanted Tails Gala, we’re pressing pause on Silver Paws for 2027.

Silver Paws has been an incredibly important fundraiser for Young at Heart over the years, and we’re so grateful for everything it has made possible. But as the cost and work of producing a large event continue to grow, we’ve been asking ourselves...

Is this still the best way to make the biggest difference for senior pets?

For 2027, we’re going to try something different - smaller events throughout the year that cost less to produce, reach new people, and hopefully put more of what we raise directly toward the senior pets who need us most.

And who knows? Maybe Silver Paws will find its way back someday. Never say never!

But before we turn the page, we want to make this year’s gala really count. So if you’ve been thinking about coming, haven’t been in a while, or have always said “maybe next year” - this is THE year!

Two of our senior dogs, Jasmine and Big Papa, will be hanging out at the McHenry Outdoor Theater - Golden Age Cinemas tonight before the doggy double feature kicks off! 🐶🎬

A bunch of great local rescues (including us!) will be there starting at 6 PM, so grab the whole family, come say hi, and stay for the movies. Especially Scooby-Doo! That's Big Papa's favorite.
