🐾 Is your pet carrying a few extra pounds? Obesity isn’t always just about how much your pet eats. Sometimes, underlying health conditions can contribute to weight gain—and that’s why a veterinary evaluation is so important.

🔎 Health conditions that may contribute to weight gain include:

* Hypothyroidism — more common in dogs and can slow metabolism.
* Cushing’s disease — can increase appetite and cause changes in body composition.
* Diabetes mellitus — can be associated with weight changes and requires careful nutritional management.
* Osteoarthritis & chronic pain — discomfort can make pets less active, leading to weight gain.
* Certain medications — including some steroids and other long-term medications, may increase appetite or promote weight gain.
💚 The good news? Healthy weight management can make a big difference!

Our veterinary team can help create a safe, individualized weight-management plan that may include therapeutic nutrition from trusted veterinary brands such as Hill’s Science Diet and Royal Canin. Options like Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic and Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Satiety Support are specifically formulated to help pets feel satisfied while managing calorie intake.

Remember: Don’t put your pet on a diet without talking to your veterinarian first. Sudden calorie restriction or an inappropriate diet can be harmful, especially when an underlying medical condition is present.

📅 Schedule a weight and wellness check today! Together, we can help your pet live a healthier, happier, more active life. 🐶🐱💚

⛈️ Storm season can be stressful for our pets, too! 🐾

Thunder, lightning, wind, and sudden changes in pressure can leave some pets feeling anxious. Here are a few ways to help them feel safe:

🏠 Create a quiet, comfortable space away from windows.
🎶 Use calming music or white noise to help mask thunder.
🧸 Keep familiar blankets, beds, and favorite toys nearby.
😌 Stay calm yourself—your pet may take cues from your behavior.
🐕 Keep pets safely indoors and make sure doors, gates, and ID tags are secure.
💊 If your pet has severe storm anxiety, talk with your veterinarian before the next storm about additional options.

Most importantly, give your pet patience and reassurance. ❤️

If your pet struggles with storm anxiety, our veterinary team is here to help. Give us a call to discuss a plan for the next storm.

☀️🌊 River Day with our favorite people! 🌊☀️

A few weeks ago, our veterinary hospital team took a well-deserved break from caring for our four-legged friends to enjoy some sunshine, laughter, and time together at our annual Staff River Day! 💦🩵

We’re so lucky to call this beautiful river and these Colorado summers home. It was the perfect chance to slow down, soak up some sunshine, and enjoy each other’s company outside of the hospital.

We’re incredibly grateful for this amazing team and all the compassion, dedication, and care they bring to our patients and their families every day. 🐾❤️

🐾 A quick Saturday update! 🐾

Our Saturdays are always in high demand, and we often need to keep space available for pets who need urgent care. Because of this, we'll now be requiring a booking fee to reserve all Saturday appointments.

The good news? Your booking fee goes toward the cost of your visit.

If your plans change, no problem! Just let us know at least 24 hours in advance, and we'll happily refund your booking fee or apply it to your rescheduled appointment.

Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice, or missed appointments, will result in the booking fee being forfeited.

🕘 Saturday hours: We're open 9:00 AM–2:00 PM every Saturday except the last Saturday of each month, when the hospital is closed.

Thanks so much for your understanding and for helping us make sure we can care for as many pets as possible—especially those who need us most. ❤️🐶🐱

🐾 Wildfire Smoke & Your Pet's Health 🐾
With the nearby wildfires, smoky skies aren't just affecting people; they can also impact our pets. Dogs and cats are especially vulnerable to poor air quality, particularly seniors, puppies and kittens, brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, and pets with heart or respiratory conditions.

🔥 Watch for these signs of smoke irritation:
• Coughing or wheezing
• Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
• Watery or irritated eyes
• Nasal discharge
• Lethargy or unusual tiredness
• Reduced appetite

🐶🐱 How you can help protect your pet:
✔️ Keep outdoor time short, especially when air quality is poor.
✔️ Exercise pets indoors whenever possible.
✔️ Keep windows and doors closed and run your air conditioning or an air purifier if available.
✔️ Make sure your pet always has access to fresh water.
✔️ Avoid strenuous activities like long walks, hikes, or fetch until air quality improves.

If your pet develops persistent coughing, has trouble breathing, collapses, or seems unusually weak, seek emergency veterinary care as soon as possible.

Stay safe, Colorado! ❤️🐾

🎆 Is your pet anxious about Fourth of July noises? 🐶🐱

Holiday noises & fireworks can be overwhelming for many pets. If your dog or cat gets anxious, now is the time to make a plan—don't wait until the last minute.

Your veterinarian can help determine whether anti-anxiety medication or other calming strategies are appropriate for your pet. These medications often work best when given before the loud noises begin.

Please keep in mind: To prescribe medication, your pet must have a current, up-to-date veterinary exam.

🏡 At-home ways to help your pet:

-Create a quiet "safe space" with their favorite bed, blankets, and toys.
-Close windows, blinds, and curtains to reduce noise and flashes.
-Turn on a TV, fan, or calming music to help mask fireworks.
-Offer a food puzzle, lick mat, or long-lasting chew to provide a positive distraction.
-Take dogs for a walk and allow plenty of exercise before fireworks begin.
-Keep pets indoors and ensure doors, gates, and windows are securely closed.
-Make sure collars, ID tags, and microchip information are up to date in case a pet escapes.

Planning ahead can make a big difference in helping your pet feel safe and comfortable this Fourth of July. ❤️🐾

🐾 Even the best patients can’t resist a lick!

Just because your pet is feeling better doesn’t mean they're fully healed. Licking and chewing at incisions can slow recovery and lead to complications.

Your pet's e-collar may not be their favorite accessory, but it's one of the best tools for protecting their healing process. Keep that cone on until your veterinarian says it's safe to remove it!

A little patience now can help ensure a smooth recovery later. 💙

Here's to wishing Dr. Madsen a smooth & speedy recovery!
