At Dog Heaven we believe in mutual rescue.
Which means the animals rescue us as much as we rescue them.
Kya came to us a Sr German Shepherd from a family that was being deployed over seas. Since Kya has been here I have seen her be extremely sensitive.
German Shepherds are known to be extremely sensitive and loyal and in tune.
What many people don’t know is that Kya could have saved one of the co owners life Nita Ann life.
Nita was experiencing back pain in May of 2026, but didn’t think much of it because she ,in her life , has experienced quite a bit of back pain from being out of alignment.
After coming home from an Animal Welfare conference, Nita was letting Kya out when all of a sudden a dog fight broke out.
She quickly used her skills of how to break up dog fights… but afterwards she couldn’t move..
She had to sit on the ground for an hour before crawling up to bed.
It was this excruciating pain that led Nita to request an MRI from her doctor for her back versus just the standard “rest & muscle relaxers” protocol he suggested.
This MRI revealed lesions on her lumbar and spine that indicated the potential of cancer. Two days later, she had a mammogram that revealed an abnormal lump in her right breast. There was still not a diagnosis, but these two things prompted Nita to think that she potentially had cancer.
Two days after her mammogram she started to experience vomiting, pain, and extreme thirst. Everyone was suggesting it was just anxiety or her nerves, but because of the previous scans, Nita was certain it was related to her cancer. She requested to go to the ER where she was admitted for hyper calcium of 16.
The normal rate of calcium is eight and she was on the verge of going into a coma, a heart attack or kidney failure. Her calcium was so high because her body had reached the breaking point of trying to filter the extra calcium in her blood from all of the tumors on her bones. In the hospital, she was diagnosed with a stage four breast cancer that had spread throughout her skeletal system.
The mutual rescue part comes in when Nita put the dots together. It was that dog fight that prompted Everything.
Without the dog fight, things would’ve progressed slower, but also deadlier because of not having the awareness of what was truly happening to her body. It is very possible that she would’ve reached hyper calcium another night and not urged to go into the ER because she would’ve had no idea that she had cancer. Without the ER that night she would have potentially died or been in a coma.
We believe animals are angels on Earth, sent to us to help us heal parts of ourselves we never knew needed healing. This is why we work so hard to protect animal life.
