Skylar's K-9 Care Dog walker and trainer, Positive reinforcement training. No quick fixes here, time, patience, consistency and understanding. She was a natural working dog.

The memory behind the name:

In 1996 Wendy, a friend and operator of a local rescue group called me to ask if Eric and I could stop by the following Sunday and look at a dog they had just pulled from the animal shelter. She knew we were involved with training German Shepherds for wilderness Search and Rescue, and she believed this female Skylar, was a candidate. I will never forget that Easter

Sunday morning when we met the most amazing canine. The abilities of this animal also explain why she was given up. Animal control had picked her up running with another dog on a back road. When the owner showed up, he claimed the smaller dog and told them they could do what they wanted with the Shepherd; she was destroying his house. We can honestly say that in the 14 years she lived with us, she never destroyed anything in our home. Skylar worked beside my husband for 9 years, helping to find missing people/children both in the wilderness and in the water. All she wanted in this life was to work and be loved. We also found that Skylar provided excellent therapy to children in our home.

I will never understand the board and train process for a family pet. I believe it has a place concerning some working dogs. I wonder if these same people send their kids off to a boot camp for potty training. Yes, I am one of these ridiculous trainers that considers raising an animal as much a responsibility as a human. We have become such a, I want immediate results with very little effort or commitment on my part society. 😕

Why I do this...❤️

Beignet and I will not be able to join the next new class at this point. You have truly been a blessing to me and my baby boy. As I tell my husband, you are firm because you love what you do and you care for dogs like no other person I have met. Your guidance, correction, and encouragement have meant more than you’ll ever know for me and Beignet.
We will continue practicing and training with the tools you have given us and when the time comes, we’ll see you again.
Below is a video from this morning when we went for a walk. It was quiet and then another dog and their owners showed up. I used some of the many tools you gave us, and he did not bark. Proud of my little guy, but I know I must remain consistent for this improvement and growth to stick.

The German Shepherd was extremely reactive with strangers and anyone getting physically close to his mom. His size has also been challenging for mom to handle. ❤️

The Aussie is completely deaf and partially blind, interacting with strangers has been difficult and fearful. ❤️

I am so proud of them and their mom's. Dealing with reactive dog's can be exhausting and draining for owners.
