Some of you may remember the four little kittens that unexpectedly became part of our lives.

🐢 Raphael

I’m happy to say all four boys are now neutered and doing wonderful!

Watching them grow from tiny kittens into playful, healthy little troublemakers has been so rewarding. They’re full of personality, constantly exploring, wrestling, and keeping me entertained every day.

They’ve definitely earned their Ninja Turtle names. 💚

Desensitization: Building Confidence One Step at a Time

One question I hear often is:

“How can I help my dog do better during grooming?”

The answer usually isn’t forcing them through scary situations—it’s introducing those experiences slowly and positively over time.

For example…

🐾 Let your dog see the vacuum before turning it on.
🐾 Reward them for simply being calm nearby.
🐾 Turn it on for just a few seconds while giving treats.
🐾 Gradually decrease the distance over several short sessions.

The same idea works for:
✔️ Hair dryers
✔️ Brushes
✔️ Nail clippers
✔️ Touching feet
✔️ Looking in ears
✔️ Standing calmly on a non-slip surface

The goal isn’t perfection in one day.

It’s teaching your dog that these experiences are safe.

Every positive experience helps build confidence, and that confidence often carries over into the grooming salon.

As groomers, we’re not just giving haircuts—we’re reading body language, adjusting our approach, and trying to help every pet have a better experience than the last.

A little practice at home can make a world of difference.

Why Desensitizing Matters

One of the greatest gifts you can give your dog isn’t a new toy—it’s confidence.

Many dogs are sensitive to everyday sounds and experiences. Things like:
🐾 Vacuums
🐾 Hair dryers
🐾 Clippers
🐾 Nail grinders
🐾 Brushes
🐾 Being touched on their feet, face, or ears

To us they’re normal… but to a dog they can seem loud, strange, or even scary.

When we help dogs slowly become comfortable with these things at home, it often makes grooming less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone.

At Flying Fur, I use tools like Happy Hoodies during drying to help muffle some of the noise around their ears and create a calmer experience. Every dog is different, and I work at their pace whenever possible.

✨ This Saturday in my Behind the Grooming Table series, I’ll show you simple ways you can safely build your dog’s confidence at home before their next appointment.

Today is all about our little stars! Small Dog Day means extra one-on-one attention, lots of cuddles, and of course their fresh Movie Month bandanas.
