I brought home a litter of five flea-ridden, approximately 5 week old kittens ten days ago. Yesterday, I gave the three remaining babies - one of whom, Clementine, has a permanent home with us - their third baby shampoo/Dawn dish soap flea bath yesterday. Now they are fluffy and smell delicious. They are romping and wrestling and snuggling and purring, eating and using their litter box like champs. They are confident and precious and incredibly loving and sweet. While I would just about kill to be able to get the remaining two to my Dad and stepmom in Florida, (I’m looking into rescue transport options etc.), I am also overwhelmed. My place is tiny and cat food and supplies are expensive (shoutout to for being my pets’ guardian angel auntie and helping in this area). I am also getting way too attached, especially to the white male. As much as I want to keep him, I CANNOT have four cats. The shelter director here says they would go quickly if I took them there… but I just can’t do it. I need to know the person who adopts them, and I really hope they can go as a bonded pair. I am praying that by some miracle, one of you out there might happen to be the absolute right person to give these two angels a home.

In all of the kitten hullabaloo yesterday, I forgot to mention that Luca‘s blood test results from blood taken on Monday are phenomenal! Not only did Dr. Vicky‘s very thorough exploration of every bodily system come up strong and clear, but he lost 5 pounds! This is extremely important because of his joint issues, and we’ve been working really hard on it. So proud of my beautiful, gorgeous, precious, healthy, strong, perfect boy. And, as always, so thankful for the continued support of this cherished community.

Last Thursday, I got a very familiar- sounding text message from my friend (and previous neighbor from Bakersfield), Armando. It said, “Hey Liz, do you know anyone who might want a kitten? Ironically, I have had kittens on the brain lately. As anyone who’s been with us for any length of time knows, feels, and understands, both Luca’s and my hearts ache deeply for Huckleberry still. I love Nero and Bea dearly, and they are exactly who they are supposed to be. We are a family, and they have taught me… and Luca… a great deal about acceptance, patience, and a kind of love that gets better with time. That being said, every time Luca desperately reaches out for play and connection, and the cats don’t reciprocate or understand what he’s trying to say, I can literally see and feel his very tangible heartbreak. And, of course, his heartbreak is my heartbreak. For some time, I have been at least half-heartedly considering bringing another kitten into the family. One that is very tiny like Huckleberry was. One who is not already bonded with a sibling cat. One who needs Luca as much as he needs her. Anyway, I had kind of looked around, but ultimately kept deciding against getting another pet. After all, there are many very real logistical and financial reasons why getting a third cat is not the best idea. However. When Armando sent me that text message, I thought to myself…” if any of those kittens looks anything like Huckleberry… logic be damned; because the Universe, in all its mysterious majesty, never makes mistakes. A moment later, when he sent me a shaky, 15 second video of a bundle of six kittens - who had been born four to five weeks earlier in his side yard, and I would bet money are relatives of Huckle’s because this was the same yard she was found in - I told him I would be at his house the following afternoon with my cat carrier in tow. This is day four. And this tiny, precious baby… Is (Luca’s) new kitty, Clementine 🍊🤍. The way they look at each other, and the way Clementine just burrowed into Luca‘s fur the moment she laid eyes on him, you’d think they were discovering each other again…for the Infinith time.

The look on Luca’s face after we’ve brought home a litter of kittens born in our friend’s side yard to a stray mama cat 🥹. This isn’t just any friend with any side yard; it’s my Bakersfield neighbor, Armando, in whose yard Huckleberry was also found, and around whose property she was very likely born. These babies favor her so much; they could literally be Huckie’s relatives. We are fostering for now, but I have a strong suspicion we might be welcoming one of these little ones into our family 🥲.
