Meet Truffle! After receiving radiation therapy for bone cancer at our sister hospital, Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital, this sweet girl recently began chemotherapy with our Oncology team here at MVRH.

Bubbles update! 🫧

Bubbles came back to see us last week for her surgery, which of course included some very important sleepy snuggles.

She’s now home and recovering in her own cozy little setup, complete with an orange-slice e-collar that may be our favorite part. 🍊

We’re so happy to hear she’s doing well at home. Happy healing, Bubbles!

From MVRH to Rome!🌎

Last month, Dr. Shira Rosenblum, our current third-year surgery resident, and Dr. Kayla Caturay, who completed her MVRH surgery residency last year, had the incredible opportunity to present their resident research projects at the 7th World Veterinary Orthopaedic Congress in Rome, Italy.

Shira and Kayla are the first residents from our surgery residency program to have their research accepted for presentation at a national or international scientific meeting. Their hard work and dedication to advancing veterinary medicine brought them all the way to an international stage, and we’re so proud to have them representing MVRH!

Georgia came to our ER after getting into something she definitely wasn’t supposed to: rat poison. 🫣

Our team induced vomiting, and thankfully she brought up a small piece of the bait. She was then treated with activated charcoal to help bind the toxin and returned over the next four days for repeat bloodwork (and plenty of snuggles 🥰).

Rodenticides can be extremely dangerous, and signs of toxicity may not appear right away, so suspected ingestion should always be treated as an emergency.

We’re happy to report Georgia’s bloodwork remained stable and she was officially in the clear! As much as we’ll miss this sweet little face, we’re even happier to see her head home healthy!

Here, members of our Emergency and Surgery teams work together to evaluate a patient and determine the best course of treatment. Collaboration like this happens throughout our hospital every day, bringing together different specialties, experience, and perspectives to make thoughtful decisions for the patients in our care.

Taking the mystery out of “out back” 🐾

Ever wonder what’s happening when your pet heads “out back” for a CT scan?

Louie came to us for oral pain and a decreased appetite. To help figure out what was causing his discomfort, he was sedated for an oral exam and CT of his head. Behind the scenes, comfy foam supports and gentle positioning helped keep Louie safely in place for his scan, while our team closely monitored his vital signs throughout the procedure and as he recovered from sedation.

His CT helped us find the source of his discomfort and get him started on the treatment he needed. Through it all, Louie kept that signature little Boxer nub wagging. 💙

Teddy first came to our Surgery team in August and is now back with Oncology for chemotherapy. Here he is being the perfect patient for his pre-treatment ultrasound — though Teddy seems pretty convinced he just signed up for an extended belly rub. 🥹

What’s happening “out back?” 👀🐾

We know it can be a little nerve-wracking when your pet leaves your side, so we’re starting a new series to take some of the mystery out of “out back.”

First up: an abdominal ultrasound!

For this patient, that means a calm, quiet room, comfortable positioning, and technicians right by their side while the doctor gets a closer look at what’s going on inside. 💙

Meet Bubbles 🧡

This little orange girl first came through our Emergency Department for what was thought to be a broken leg. Her X-rays told a different story, though, and our team saw changes that warranted a closer look.

Two weeks later, repeat X-rays showed the progression we had been watching for: avascular necrosis of the femoral head. This is a loss of blood supply that causes the bone to deteriorate over time (known in the human pediatric world as Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease).

Bubbles is now scheduled for a femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHNO) to remove the affected portion of her hip joint, relieve painful contact, and get her back to doing all the kitten things comfortably.

We can’t wait to see Bubbles back on her paws and we’ll be sure to share an update! 🐾
