🐾 World Rabies Day is today! Rabies is preventable with vaccination, and keeping your dog or cat up to date is one of the easiest ways to help protect them. ❤️

Rabies is still VERY much present here in Maine. As of September 14, 2026, Maine has reported 43 confirmed cases of animal rabies across 13 counties this year. Maine's most commonly infected wildlife include raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes. 🦝🦨🦇🦊

In 2024 alone, 60 animals tested positive for rabies in Maine, including 28 raccoons, 14 skunks, 10 bats, and 5 foxes. Those cases were associated with exposures involving both pets and people.

Here in Maine, rabies vaccination is required by law:

🐶 Dogs must be vaccinated within 30 days of reaching 3 months of age.
🐱 Cats must be vaccinated once they are over 3 months old.

💉 After the initial vaccine, boosters are required according to the recommended interval for the vaccine given.

Because wildlife can carry and transmit rabies, keeping pets vaccinated creates an important layer of protection for your family and community, too. Maine CDC recommends keeping dogs, cats, ferrets, and livestock current on their rabies vaccinations.

And remember: you don't have to see an obviously sick animal for rabies exposure to be a concern. Bats can be particularly tricky because their bites may be difficult to detect. If your pet has come into contact with a bat or another potentially rabid animal, contact your veterinarian promptly for guidance.

Not sure if your pet's rabies vaccine is current? Check their records or give your veterinarian a call!

Happy Monday — it’s Spay & Neuter Day! 🐾💜

Today, 24 lives are changing right here in Carmel!

We are so excited to be hosting a low-cost spay/neuter clinic today at the Golden Harvest Grange, with our friends at PALS bringing their mobile spay/neuter rig directly to our community.

And, of course, Panini is here “helping.” 😂💜 Because apparently supervising an entire spay/neuter clinic has now been added to her already very impressive résumé.

huge THANK YOU to PALS for packing up the rig, traveling to Carmel, and bringing this desperately needed service directly to our area. And thank you to the Golden Harvest Grange for giving us a place to make today happen.

Today we have 24 cats, one incredible veterinary team, a mobile clinic, and one tiny Panini who is absolutely convinced she is part of the staff. 😂🐱💜

One mission. One team. Prevention

A little update on flea & tick prevention from PALS. 🐱

We are moving away from keeping flea and tick medications in stock at the shelter and will be asking our clients to order these medications through our online pharmacy going forward. This will allow us to keep things simpler and make it easier for clients to get their pets’ preventatives when they need them.

We do still have some products on hand, and we’ll have the following available at the prices below until they’re gone

Please remember: These medications are only available to current PALS clients. Your cat must have been seen by a PALS veterinarian within the past year.

Once our current inventory is gone, we’ll direct clients to our online pharmacy for future flea & tick medication orders.

We are now offering an online pharmacy to existing clients. Check it out here: https://palsfelinevetservice.covetruspharmacy.com/

Please remember: This pharmacy is only available to current PALS clients. Your cat must have been seen by a PALS veterinarian within the past year.
